Tho Basin Reservo this afternoon will be tho scene of one of the most important. matches in tho annals of "soccer"" football in New Zealand—the representative, match between Otago, the challengers, and Wellington, the defenders of tho Drown Shield, which has remained in the Empire City for two successive years now. The Otago men arrived in Wellington yesterday morning, and have been well looked after by tho executive officials of the Wellington Football Association. Last evening the visitors wero, tho guests of the association at the King's Theatre, and "this evening, after the battle, will be entertained at dinner at the Y.M.C.A. HOCKEY.
THE EVENTS TO-DAY. Two very interesting hockey matches will be played at Day s Bay this afternoon. In tho match Wangamu v. Wellington very interesting sport is promised, as the Wanganui representatives will endeavour to capture tho shield from the Wellington representatives. The ladies' match will also be a, very even contest between Craven School and Wellington. Special steamers will run at 1.15 p.m. and 2.30 p.m.

CLUB'S ANNUAL REPORT. In presenting the twelfth annual report, and balance-sheet, the committee of the Newtown Tennis Club congratulate members on' now being -satisfactorily' settled at their permanent' courts. The membership of. the club during the year totalled '■tliirty-five ladies and .'thirty-seven men, leaving.eight vacancies for men. The receipts amounted to £322 9s. lOd., and the total expenditure £321 10s., leaving a balance of 19s. lOd. Tho sum of £153- additional r was raised among members and their friends to assist in the completion, of works during the year, and it is hoped that a further canvass this coming season will result in' obtaining an amount sufficient to complete, the pavilion, finish off drains ground the courts, and erect wire.'netting fences at each end., The following are .the results of • the club's competitions: — Handicap Singles:' Ladies, Miss Dempsey: m'en, 'F. At a special meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association held this evening the district scheme was modified, and, Tinder the alterod rules, a'ny player who has played for the samo district club for five successivo cricket seasons may (if he so desires);play' for that district for the rest of his cricket career. A proviso is added that if, after exercising their-privilege, any player shall play for another club, the '■ privilege shall cease to exist. THE SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM.
