Court yesterday morning when it became necessary- tojut' : a Chinese witness upon oath. His Wor--ship intimated' that the- 1 witnessi" (a woman) could "blow out a match, or. break .a plate:" Counsel suggested .that • the proper way was '"to operate on a rooster," but apparently , , the Court did' not possess n rooster for the purpose.. .-.' The bland witness,. when questioned, ■ offered to "swear" any way they, liked." His Worship reminded her that the bath to be administered must be the one most binding on'her conscience, but,'as;.all .forms of oath seemed alike to her, .and the ■ interpreter assured', the Court • that . she had never been sworn before, the most :expedient form was adopted, and the oath' was. administered by means of the 6er- . gcant's matches.
