Ottawa, August 19. -Sir Wilfrid Laurier, 'Prime Minister of Canada, in a speech at Vancouver) promised that the Government would consider- the question of increasing the poll tax on Chinese entering Canada, but added that he could not .entertain the proposal to'subject Japanese immigrants to the indignity, of a head tax, even if refusal should, involve the downfall of the Ministry: . "The days are past," said Sir Wilfrid .Laurier, "when it is politic to treat other races with contempt and harshness. If economic reasons necessitate a distinction; let'it be done by mutual agreement." .
