» vice-president sits tight. mr. Roosevelt on the warpath again. interesting struggle PENDING. By Telegraph- Press Association-Copyright. (Ree. ■ August 19, 10.30 p.m.) New Yqi'k, August 19. The President, Mr. Taft, has had an important interview with Air. J. S. Sherman, the Vico-Presidciit, who was on Wednesday elected to the chairmanship of the- Republican State Convention for New York, defeating Mr. Roosevelt. Mr. Sherman- is reported to have declared positively that he had-no.inten-tion of withdrawing from the chairmanship in Mr. Roosevelt's favour. ' He promised, however, that the Now York Convention's platform would strongly approve Mr. Taft's administration. Mr. Sherman, who is a staunch supporter of the orthodpx or Conservative section of the Republican party, urged Mr.'Taft, to-.draft a letter for early publication, which would sound the keynote in the campaign for the Congressional elections, and especially uphold the Payne tariff, against which the "insurgent" or Radical Republicans have been fighting. Mr. Sherman also pleaded generally for a good old-fashioned Republican campaign on old-fashioned lines. It is- understood that Mr. Taft promised to draft a letter as suggested, but declared Jhat he would frame it as his own. judgment dictated. Both Mr. Sherman and Mr. Taft are stated to be agreed that it is impossible that Mr. Cnnrion should be reelected as Speaker of tho House of Representatives. ■ . Tiie progressive Republicans are vigorously working to control the New York Convention so as to secure Mr. Roosevelt's seleotion as Chairman., ■ Mr. Roosevelt . has also arranged a strenuous speech-making tour, starting on August 27.
