Dr. Findlay inform- ' ed the C<mncil that .the total" number : of persons in the gaols on Thursday, last, was 900, of whom 420, or 46.6 per. cent,- were native-born. The native-born ovor the age. of 18 ' years' was 48 per cent, and during last' ' . year 3051' native-born people had been sent to gaol, concluded Dr. Findlay. . This total was made up by a number of the- prisoners going in and out of gaol several times. ''■■'■, . : Tlie lack of parental discipline in New Zealand was referred to'yester-. day in the Legislative Council by the Hon. J. Ban - who informed the Council that-he had seen children talking to and behaving towards their parents in. a manner which astonished him.
