THE LATE MR. J. J. DEVINE.

Tho funeral of tlie late Mr. J. J. Devine was very largely attended yesterday morning. A solemn requiem mass was first lield in St. Mary of the Angels Church, which was filled. Mass was celebrated by the Very Kev. Demi ltegnault, the Her. father Quinu, acting as deacon, Kev. Father Bowdcn as subdeacon, ami Key. Father Hurley as Master of Ceremonies. The Verv Kev. Father O'Shea, S.M., V.G., Verv Kev. Archdeacon Dovoy, and Kev. Fathers Goggun, Venning, and M'Kamaru were also at the altar. The choir consisted of the clergy from St. Patrick's College, Kev. Father Ainsworth, of the West Coast, and students from the college. The Kev. Father Kchaell'er was at the organ, and Kev. Father Gilbert acted as conductor.

The Very Rev. Fatlier O'Shea said that by Mr. Devine's death the City Council had lost n wise and vigorous councillor, and the city u close guardian of its interests. Mr. Devine's private character was beyond reproach, and he was always ready to uphold the views of his Church.

' The chief mourners were Messrs. B. and I>\ Devine, sons>of the deceased, and the pall-bearers were Messrs. J. W. Callaghan, W. F. Feeney, P. D. HosUins, .1. O'Sullivnn, J. Fitzpatrick, and C. M'lh'tam, officers of the Wellington Hibernian Lodge, of which Mr. Devine was a member. Among those, present wore tho Mayor and members of the City Council, the'leading officials of the council, the Attorney-General (Hon. Dr. Findley), and numerous members of tho legal profession, representatives of the Miramar Borough Council, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and Harbour Board, and a large number of other leading citizens. Tho Prime Minister, who was too unwell to bo present, was represented by his son, Mr. Gladstone Ward, i'he interment in the Karori Cemetery ivus conducted by. the Very Kev. Father u'Sheu, assisted by the Very Kev. Dean Regnnult, Very Kev. Archdeacon Devoy, and Kev. Fathers Venning and Bowden. The special meeting of the City Council, to deal with salaries, which was to have been held to-day, has been postponed out of tcspect to the memory of the late Mr. Devine. Just before 5 p.m; yesterday, tho Miramar borough councillors and the clerk, who had represented tho borough at the funeral, assembled at the Council Office, when tho Mayor, Mr. John Brodie, proposed tho following motion:—"That the council's deepest sympathy in tho loss sustained by Mrs. Devine through the death of Mr. J. J. Devine be conveyed to ■ her, and that the council's high appreciation of tho valuable services rendered during the past six years by Mr. Devine as borough solicitor bo placed on record." Speaking to the motion, his Worship referred in terms of tho warmest eulogy to the late gentleman's connection with tho borough as its solicitor since its establishment'in 190 J. His services h,ad been of particular value in- -such important matters as the drafting of the municipal by-laws, tramway agreements, and negotiations between tho borough and the Wellington, Harbour Board, and tho Wellington City Council. The motion was carried in silence, councillors standing. At the meeting of the Trades and Labour Council last night, a resolution was passed expressing sympathy with the wife and family of the lato Mr. J. J. Devine.
