OBITUARY.

MR. LAWRENCE E. EEADE; :Mr. Lawrence E. Ecade, solicitor, ofFoxton, who-sustained serious injury to his head through falling off a tram-car in Vivian,Street;in July last, died at the,' hospital at 8 a.m. yesterday, from'syncope, following upon an operation. The late Mr. Eeade, who was. 63 years of age, was born at Gorukpore, India, and ivas 'the son of Mr. Edward Anderson. Eeade, C.8., Governor of one of th» small provinces near Bengal, and a great friend of-. Sir' Henry Lawrence. Charles' Eeade, the novelist, was an uncle. The late gentleman was educated at Tubbridge School (in England), camo out to New Zcalaiul about thirty-iivo years ago, and studied law in Dunedin. He thea Vent to Oamaru, where ho married' a' daughter of, the late Mr. George Booth. Latterly ho lived in Christchurch, Inyorcargill, Melbourne, Wellington, Feild-' ing, and finally in Foxton. In his younger days ho was a prominent figure in New Zealand cricket, a representative player for Otago and Canterbury, an excellent. oarsman and tennis player. His wife • predeceased him by three years. The family consists of Mr. E. B. L. Eeade, of the Railway Department, Wellington; Mr. ' A. B. Eeade, contractor, Havelock, Marlborough; and Mr. C. C. Eeade, editor ©J the "New Zealand Graphic." At tho inquest, which was conducted at • the hospital by Mr. W. E.' Haselden, '■' District Coroner, yesterday afternoon, it was stated by Dr.'Hardwieke Smith, the •. Medical' Superintendent, that tho late' Mr.•'. Reads was admitted to llic hospital for treatment on Saturday, July 2, the. date of his accident,' after having been attended to at the Friendly Societies' Dispensary' in Vivian Street, and- was subse-.', quently discharged, apparently well. On the following Monday (July 4), he was re- : admitted, when an operation was. pei--, formed, and ho apparently recovered. Ho was discharged on July'.i29,'■ having been-, all right for a fortnight ipreviously. On' ■August 15, he was again'- admitted, suffering from fits. Another"-, operation waa performed, but the patient gradually sank, and'expired yesterday In the opinion of the witness, death was im T ! mediately due to syncope following uaontho last operation. The primal cause" of death was the injury sustained on Only.J. 2, whereby one of the arteries was-scv-. ered, resulting in hemorrhage of ' the brain, and tho development of fits.
