FORTY-FIVE LIVES LOST IN COLLISION. SPANISH STEAMER SUNK. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. ~- Madrid, August. IG. • During a fog the German steamer Elsn. collided with the Spanish steamer Martos, thirty-two miles west of Tarifa, in the extreme south of Spain, and fifteen miles west-south-west of Gibraltar. The Martos was sunk and thirty-two of her passengers and seven of the crew drowned. The Elsa put in at Gibraltar. Sho is badly damaged. (Rcc. August 18, 0.20.a.m.) London, August 17. The steamer Martos sank in two minutes. Forty-five persons were drowned, including a mother and three children travelling in the saloon. The third-class passengers were principally fishermen with wives and child-' ren. , The captain, who was a septuagenarian, went down.standing on the bridge. One survivor swam for an hour, and was twice suoked under by a. whirlpool. The Elsa saved 65' persons. AUSTRALIAN VESSEL AGROUND. 1 ' , Adelaide, August 17. The Adelaide Steam Ship Company's steamer Investigator is aground on the rocks at Port Elizabeth. She is badly damaged. ■ The engine-room is flooded. It is feared she will become a total wreck. ■ ■ GERMAN LINER .LOST. (Rec. August 18, 0.20 a.m.) London, August 17. The German East African liner Khedive, 5106 tons, has been totally wrecked on the rocks at Cape Morgan, South Africa. One of the officers was drowned. The vessel was valued at ,£70,000, and the cargo at £50,000./
