EDUCATION CONFERENCE.
'DELEGATES FROM EDUCATION ■:..'.'. ' BOARDS. '..■-.. On- Tuesday next, a. conference of delegates from all but two—Marlborough and Ntlson-of the thirteen education boards m -A-ew Zealand will commence its sittings at the office -of-, the Wellington Education Board. ■ This conference, initiated \by the Wanganui Board,' has no connection' with that forecasted by the Minister for Education (Hon. G. Fowlds) sometime ago,;and so may be described as being of a more or less unofficial character.
The agendapaper is a.formidable looking document, and- will hardly be disposed of, under a week. There are no fewer than 74 remits, many of thein reSH «> -highly controversial; subjects. The. Southland. Board is ,of the opinion that any proposals 'for. removing tho maintenance" of education from the State etc.,; to .subsidiary bodies is retrograde, and should be opposed by all boaVds, 'as education should be national, compulsory full, and free." . ~-■ -

Questions relating to building grants, capitation to committees, medical inspection" of schools, leaving certificates, promotion, and classification 'of. teachers, control of technical schools, also appear in the guise of remits from various boards.
