(by Telegrapn.-Preeß Association,) Auckland, August Iβ. . George Mitchell, a young man, was charged at the Police Court to-day that he did on the, 14th instant assault Adelaide Mills by biting her on'the nose. .

Mr. Hackett (for defendant) said he understood the girl did not waut the case instituted. The youug man was her lover, and they wore' having, as he said, a bit of a smoodge," when, instead of kissing her, he accidentally gave her a nip on the nose. The girl wonted the case withdrawn.

Sub-Inspector Hendry: That's so. I don't. It is a brutal assault. . I have got plenty of evidence' of what took place. . • , i

Evidence was given .by. the young lady that the accused came to her house on Sunday night to see her. They had a little bit of trouble over a misunderstanding about a letter, and accused held her head back,and bit her nose.;

Gross-examined, witness said' she did not think tho accused would hurt her intentionally. .

"If the police are going to interest licmselves in every lovers' quarrel," said Mr. Hackett, "then I submit their hands are going to be full for quite a long time." •.'•■'

Tho accused swore that he had had no intention of injuring the .girl. Tile Bench were satisfied that an. assault had been committed.. It was evident the girl was sheltering the young follow, and they sympathised with her. The case was proved, and a fine of £2 and costs, with an alternative of a month's imprisonment, was imposed. The sequel to the case was that the young'lady produced tho'money to pay "the fine. . . . ■ ■ ■
