Erie-, Smail, residing in Castle Street, is now in the hospital suffering from the effects of poison : said to bo self-admin-istered. According to" a statement made .by.Mr. Steve Borcham, Smail was in the Trades Hall about 9.10 last, night. He walked into the of a passage,, and said: "Well, Steve, old man, lam going to. do it in,", where- ~ upon ho took, a r small bottle out of his pocket, and drank one-third of the' contents. He immediatoly reeled back, and fell on the floor. An emetic was administered--as. soon as possible, and ..',■• Smail was removed to the hospital in . a serious condition. In his statement •'' to the police Smail said:' "I took it, and I'll take it again. I am not wanted'. A man has to work for. 2s. lid. a. day."
