The Invercargill Y.M.C.A. lias just let the contract for their new building for ,£■1350. ' Mr. John R. Mott, foreign work secretary of the International Committee of tho Y.M.C.A.', and 'chairman of tlio recent .World's Missionary Conference, has had the degree LL.D. conferred oil him by the Edinburgh University. Tho" second National Convention of . the Y.M.C.A.'s,. Australia and Now Zealand, will-be held in Wellington oil September 30 to October 5. -A representative gathering is expected. Association life in South Africa is developing' in a remarkably encouraging manner. Mr. John S. Tichenor, tho travelling and -organising secretary, has lifted almost every centre to a new level financially, and has inspired hopo and enthusiasm everywhere. One of the outcoincslof bis energy was tho recent Secretaries' Conference, the 'Tirst Conference of South African Employed Officers." The conference was essentially practical and stimulating. The presence of Mr. I'. P. Phillips (from Pittsburg) and Mr. E. V. Painter (Ivnoxvillc), who had recently arrived to take up work at Port Elizabeth and Bloenifontein respectively, added considerably to the interest. Among the visitors was the Hon. J. D. Cartwright, M.T..C., president of tile. Capo Town Association and representative for South Africa on the World's Committee. Mr. Tichenor writes-.—"At onr first South African Conference and Institute we had fourteen men registered, and out of these three- or four have practically decided to enter ' association work if the way opens, and. some of them will probably soon go into tlio assistant secretaryship' for training."
