" "THE FENCING MASTER," Tlio Hugh J. Ward Company appeared again last evening in Winslow's com-edy-tlrama "The l'cucing Master." In this play Mr. Ward is given an , exceptional opportunity of displaying his rare versatility. It is always * difficult for an actor, who has inado his reputation in comedy roles, to succeed in a part which is the. direct antithesis, and that Mr. Ward 'is , able to do so is proof positive of the varied talent of tlio popular actor. "The Fencing Master" is brightened by some clever characterisation b.y Mr. Kobt. Greig as Luigi, Mr. Chas. Phillips, as. Mr. Wink, Mr. Wykehani as tlie Hon. Stewart Grayvillo, Mr. Aubrey Jlallalieuas Carlo Rossi, and Mr. L. Harding as Phillip Grayvillo.' Miss Grace Pafottaexhibits her characteristic charm as Lillian Montgomery, and Miss Ghiloni is admirably suited as the intensely bourgeois Mrs. Dexter Brown. The final performance , of "Tlio Fencing Master" will be given, this evening.
THEATRE ROYAL. The capital programme which has attracted good audiences to' the Theatre Royal throughout the week will be rep'lted this evening for the last time, supplemented by the re-appearance of Miss Beattie M'Donald, the popular serio, and-the two Gibson Girls, a favourite duo with Wellington audiences. Other star tails now. on the , bill are ValdarG and Varno, A-rdell, Fanny Halle, and the Royal Sisters.. Messrs. Chas. Reeves, Will Roboy, Ward Lear, and Rupert Christie will make their last appearance this evening. KING'S THEATRE.. There was again a large attendance at the King's Theatre' last night; The' current programme contains a great variety of excellent films. One of the best of the "scenic" class depicts the .natural wonders of the Jenolan Caves, Now South Wales. ■ Interesting stories are told by those entitled "A Helping Hand" and "A Helpless Witness." Last evening the floor space was_ taxed, the patronage accorded testifying to the continued popularity of this winter' pastime. "CASTE.". ■ The first performance of T. W. Robertson's popular comedy by Miss Hardinge. Maltby and her company of' 'amateurs, takes placo -at the .Opera House on. Monday evening next, . and from all indications the short season of three nights should be a very successful one. . The various characters have been allotted as follow:—Hon. George D'Alroy, Mr. Vivian Uhind; Captain.Hawtree, Mr. Ellico Mills; Eccles, Mr. W. P. Bastin; Sam Gerridge, Mr. D. N. Isaacs; Marquise do St. •Maur, Miss Bertha Miles; POU3;, Miss Stella Putman; and Esther, Miss; Mabel Hardinge Maltby! On; Tuesday and Wednesday only, ; "Caste" will be preceded by "The Laughter Bureau," an original one-act play; and on each of the three evenings an orchastra under 3lr. D. A. Musio, song, and story figured in the programme of an evening's enter-, tainment promoted by":the Wellington Lacrosse Association, and held at St. Peter's-Schoolroom last night, for the purpose of supplementing tho " funds for the improvement of the Bport.-There was a fair house. The first naif of the programme , ' was musio—vocal■' and instrumental. Items were contributed by Misses Ruby M'Donald and Eileen Driscoll, and Messrs.-!?. Palmer, S. Meyer, J. M. dark, E. Walker, and T. w! Brown. Tho playetto entitled "A Bachelor's Reverie"" was afterwards submitted and proved a: great success. The excellence of the programme reflected credit on Mr. A. G. who was assisted in the "management by Miss A. Portman and Messrs. Philip Palmer (accompanist), p. i, M'Govem (secretary), J\ Lampen, and W.Page. During the interval, Mr. & C. Lev.vey, president of the Lacrosse Association, extended a welcome to the representative team,.which had recently returned from a" successful .trip to Auckland. .• ," • ' ■■:.-■' ....':. NATIONAL PICTURE COMPANY. The National-Picture Company' will occupy the Opera House from-August IS to 31, when, by'special arrangement with Hayward's Enterprise Company, a now specialty in moving pictures wall be presented to Wellington for tho first time... The 'well-Known comedian Harry Laudor' will be pictorially. and vocally represented. This specialty was shown for 43 consecutive weeks at Spencer's Lyceum, Sydney, to crowded houses', and is at present, being shown in His Majesty's Thcaitro, Christchurch, by Hay ward's Enterprise Company to full houses, having run there for about, six weeks. Mr. Henry Hayward has secured tlio solo right of this out-fit for Now Zealand. The pictorial and vocal .setting is effected by'-an electrical and pneumatic 'connection with the moving picture making tho two -perfectly in harmony, and eliminating any metallic or uneven sound or movement. Two or three ' changes 1 of. programme will. be shown during, tho short season here, and the Lauder songs will be supplemented by a- good list of other subjects now to Wellington. ■ . ' CONCERT,ON SUNDAY. ' The Garrison Band will give a concert at the Town Hall to-inorrow eveiim<viii aid of the Children's Hospital. The band will bo assisted by Mr. H. -, N. Fletcher, tenor vocalist,' and Mr. D. Kenny, accompanist. The programme will include instrumental quartets, trios, etc., and the public can oxj>ect a musical treat. - TO-NIGHT'S ORGAN RECITAL. To-night at 8. o'clock Mr. Maujjhan Barnctt will play on the Town Hail organ.
