-At B,o'clock 'last night, Detective Cassolls arrested a woman on a charge of having stolen a gold diamond ring, valued at £5, from Charles Franks, oh August 8. At.ll p.m. the detective apprehended the woman's husband on a charge of having . received the ring, knowing it to have been stolen. About 40 officers-were present at .the Garrison .Officers' Club last evening, when very interesting lecturettes wero given by the officers of the Wellington Garrison Artillery Division on the subject of "The Fixed Coast' Defences of Wellington 'in Time of War." Tho Officer Commanding the Division (LieutColonel G. F. C. Campbell) led off with an interesting review of the strategetical points .of tho naval situation-in the Pacific, and the tactical considerations attaching to the coast defences of Now Zealand on mobilisation.. He was followed by Major F. J. Courtney, who discussed the duties of the fire commander by day and by, night during the period of mobilisation. Then Major Menzies dealt with the work of the battery commanders, while Capta'in Bcvan devoted himself to a reviowof tho conditions attaching to tho examination service in timo of war.
