Boddington to amend tho rules so that only playing members would vote on questions concerning tho affairs of the club was lost. Three delegates were appointed to confer with delegates of the Dannevirke Club with a..view to so arranging matters that the dates for open tournaments would not clash. Votes of thanks to the out-going oflicers and tho chairman terminated the meeting.

Two mcmbers_ were accepted by clearance, two candidates initiated, and two proposed for membership. Bros. Pickering, Shaekleton, and Gourley were appointed delegates on the Friendly Socioties' Council. Kolief was granted to a distressed brother of the Maitai Lodge. P.A.'s Bros. Jjeuen, Miller, and M'Gaughran were presented, with P.A. degrees issued by the. Grand Lodge. It was resolved to procure a P.A. collar for Bro. J. G. Miller for past services to the Lodge. It was dccidcd to meet the Oddfellows in a card tournament on Friday evening.

i Daring the past month there has been a marked diminution in the number of applicants for casual relief to the secretary of the Masterton Benevolent Society as compared with the previous month. There are fewer men on the roads than there were some time back.

Mr. E. W. Abbott, organising secretary of the Shearers' Union, leaves :Masterton on Saturday for the Wanganui district, where ho will conduct an organising campaign.

At its meeting yesterday the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club placed on record the valuable services rendered to tlie club and to lawn tenuis generally by Mr. C. C. Cox, formerly of this town, hut now of Dannevirke.

At a special meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday special orders were made authorising the raising of a loan. of' .E3OOO under the Local Bodies Loan Act, I9OS, for Ihe construction of two bridges over the AVaipoua River and twenty-six chains of. the approaches thereto.

The Masterton County Council has decided to bring into operation part two of the Motor-car Registration Act, 190S, which will enable it to compel the registration of motor-cars.

A sacred conceit is to be beld on Sunday evening next to provide funds for tho purchase of an American organ for use at the local hospital.

The Public Works Department lias authorised the expenditure by the Masterton County Council of grants of dfiloO on the Mangorei Road and .£222 on the Fornyhurst Road. .

Tlie question of boundary gates on roads, which have always been a source of annoyance to travellers, was discussed by tho Masterton Oounty Council yesterday. Although no definite action was taken, it is understood that the matter will be further dealt with at an early date.

The Treasury forwarded to the Masterton County Council the sum of .£2290, which is the balance of. the WeraitiFemyhurst Road loan.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton Council Council was held yesterday, Councillor W. J. Welch occupying the chair. It was decided to inform Mr. J. C. Wrigley, who wrote on tho subject, that the question of-gates on county roads was under tho consideration.of the council. Tho District Engineer advised' that tho plans of the Mangor.i bridge had been approved, subject to certain minor alterations. -A deputation from the Lansdowne Water Supply Committee waited on the council in reference to regulating the supply of the Waipipi River. ' It was decided to placc tbe services of the engineer at the disposal of tbe committee, and to recommend it to appoint Mr. H. G. Williams in reference to the regulating, of the supply. It was decided to forward papers, to the ratepayers in the Alfrodton Riding, asking tliem to vote on the question of whether they desired to amalgamate with tho Eketahuna Count}- or not.

The tender of Messrs. Coradine and Whittaker, of Masterton,, has been accepted for the erection of new brick offices in Queen Street for Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd. • . Another consignment of 150,000 brown trout ova has reached the Masterton hatcheries from Canterbury, bringing the total received to 550,000, in addition to 150,000 rainbow trout received from Rotorua.

Masterton, August 11. . Mr. J. Bourke, who has just returned from a visit to Australia, states that there' is a good market there for draught horses; Shipping and other charges are, however, so high that the margin of profit left to the dealer is not considerable. ,

The Rev. Mr. Olds, who succeeds tlio Rev. C. E. Torter as minister of the local Methodist Church, was entertained at a welcome "social" this evening. ■

■ The annual "social" in connection with the Red Star Football Club was held in the Drill Hall this evening, and proved a successful function.

Building operations, which havo. been rather slack during tho last year or two, are showing distinct signs of improvement. Building contracts of a value, of between .£BOOO and .£9OOO have been let in the borough during tho last few months. ,
