"HIPPOS" ON THE COURSE.
— —-4 —— —' SHOOTING ON THE ZAMBESI. : "They are shooting the 'hippos' out ol the river (Zambesi), so that nothing may happen- there." So reads an extract from a letter received locally from Mr, H. Lloyd, trainer tor "Dick" '.trust, now at the Zambesi. From this it is judged that hippopotami are still fairly numerous, ' and that it is even possible that Harry ' or Arnst may be placed in the awkward position of having to hurdle over the back of a rising "Hippo" in the race on Thursday next for the championship of the., world. It may be imaginable that n very much interested party may train a "hippo" to obstruct the boat of cither one-or other of the scullers. All things are possible on the Zambesi. No curfew is needed to knell the residents to bed. ' At nightfall the houses are cleared as far as possible, of mosquitos. The mosquitoproof netting is fastened close everywhere, fires are lighted, and all is made snug '■' for the night, such precautions being ne- ' cessary to avoid the deadly miasma from- • the ground mid the fever-charged virus of the busy mosquito.
