WHEN UNEMPLOYMENT WAS RIFE.

MR. BUCHANAN CORRECTS THE PRIME MINISTER. Several statements made by the Prime Minister in his Winton speech wcro effectively replied to by Mr. Buchanan, M.P., in the course of his speech on the Budget yesterday.. One of them related to the steps which-had been taken by' Ike Government to/meet the position when unemployment was so rife last winter. Among other things whicli Sir Joseph claimed- had been done, was the redoubling of the number of men employed on public works. He (Mr. Buchanan) found, however, that such was not a fact. The official figures showed that tho number of workers on Government co-operative works in February was 9917. . During succeeding months workers were turned off 1 as under:—March, 107.; April, 883; May, 800; Juno, 1457 ; July, 404; August, 1894. "It will thus bo seen," added Mr. Buchanan,' "that instead of the number of workers being redoubled, during tho period it was reduced by onehalf." "You cannot be reading the 1909 figures," commented the Hon. R. M'Kenzie. . . Mr. Buchanan assured the Minister that the return from which ho was quoting wna for last year. -. t ■ >
