(By Tolcsraph.—Special Correspondent.! Wanganui, August 9. A-start was made to-day with the excavation of the foundations for the enlargement of. , the freezing works at Castlecliff. The freezing and' storage rooms, abutting on to the wharf, will ,be carrk-d out to the western boundary of the property near the pilot station, and an extra story will form the new freezing chamber, and, being on a level with tho killing' rooms, carcasses can be run straight into it by overhead travellers, instead of, as at present; being lowered to the freezing chamber, Extra travellers for the handling of beef will also be installed. Tho present freezing chamber, on tho second, story, will be used either for freezing or storing, as circumstances require, while the storage room on the ground floor will be retained as such. The extensions will give an increased storage capacity equal to s 15,000 carcasses, and tho total amount that can bo stored at ono time will be -50,000 carcasses. Mr; W. Knuckey is the successful tenderer for the work, the contract price being £3000.. In. addition the. company is spending another £1000 on new work which it will put in itself,--making atotal of £4000 to bo spent oil the freezing works before, the new season opens.
