A new departure is announced in connection with the facilities for the sail training, of future officers of tho mercantile marine (says an English exchange). For some time, past Messrs. Devitt' and. Moore have employed the Port Jaekson as an ocean training vessel, and numerous cadets who have voyaged in her to Australia and back have gained sailing ship experience, providing a valuable foundation lor a future executive career. It is now intimated, that the firm in question have bought tho Ama Bcgonakoa, a four-roasted steel barque, specially built in 1902 for ocean training purposes, and that a private company has been formed to take . her over, and the Port" Jackson as well. . The newly-acquired vessel will bo re-named .the Mcdway. and ■ will. also bo employed in carrying cadots to', aud from Australia. ■ An interesting feature is the association of the Union Castle Lino and the Shaw, Savill, and Albion , Company with the scheme. This means that both undertakings aro impressed with , -the increasing difficulty of obtaining sail-trained officers ■and that they see the need of making some effort to ensure a future suoply. It follows that these companies will give a preference of executive employment to young: men trained in tho Port Jackson and the Mcdway, provided of course, that they do well at sea, and secure the necessary qualification. Tho fact that an avenue of employment is thus definitely opened out for the cadets affords an inducement to the adoption of a son life which would bear good fruit. ■ These cadet-ships aro specially fitted-for the pur-'-isa. They alao carry cargo,. so that the embryo officers get a practical introduction to the many sides of the seaman's career. ■ , ■ Loading and discharging operations of vessels in port were considerably interfered with yesterday by tho rain and this, combined with a. heavy ,sea in the.Strait, resulted in the departure of several vessel's being postponed until to-day. Among the number so held up wore the Manaroa, the Hilia, and the Blenheim. The Nairnshiro and tho Caldergrovo did not lift hatches yesterday. The Nairnshirc will- not now leavo. for Timarn before Thursday, • and it will be tho end of the week beforo tho Caldergrove sails for Lyttclton. v The Tyser liner Indraghiri, which arrived at Melbourne on -July 31, has an uneventful voyage, of 54 days from New York. Her cargo included a large quantity of steel rails for the Victorian Government. Another new shipping company is likely to be formed in New Zealand. It is understood that Captain Holm, late of I tho Laiidord'.Uc, Is going in for n. small steamer for the West Coast trade. Mr. J. M'Convillo. chief engineer of the Kapuni, has resumed duty after holiday leave, ond Mr. J. M'Lean has signed off. Mr. W. Birch has joined the Manourika as third ofilcer, in place of s[r. F. Gartner. Yesterday tho Storm signed on foreign articles for tho trip to Oh.lt-h-j.ln Islands. An Italian ougincor (Signor Giibellini) has invented a process for the building of ships in artificial stone, aud a vesacl of this type Is. working with so much suecess on the Main at I , rankfort that several more are in course of construction in Italy and Germany. The great 'advantage of the system is that snips built of reinforced concrete are free from barnaclen As compared with ordinary ships, the weight of a vessel is one-thiril heavier, but the cost of construction is Inss lw fourth.
