August 3, 0.5 a.m.) ' Sydney, August 8. ■ Mr.- Floyd, Arnst's mauager, in a letter to tho "Sun," dated July 8, reports that ho is down with an attack of fevery Ijut Dick and Jack Arnst are all right. They are waiting for the erection of special huts, and in the meantime are living in a mosquito-proof cottage. Dick Arnst is doing two solid; rows daily, but cannot got out to do any exorcise at night. In the night they have to go inside and shut themselves up from difsk until next day. It is too dangeious to go outside at night, ho writes, if you want to escape the fever. Mr. Floyd mentions that the British South African Company is showing much generosity, and paying all expenses. •
ARNST IN AFRICA.
PARTICULARS OF THE COURSE. Writing from Livingstone (Rhodesia) by the latest mail to a Wellington resident, ilr. narry Floyd, who is training world's champion sculler "Dick" Arnst, of Now Zealand, 'for his match against Barry, the English champion, gives further interesting details as to tlie doings of the New-Zealanders in South Africa. ' "Thfl B.S.A. Company," says Mr. Floyd, "gave us free passes over their line, and secured for us concessions on the Capo line, besides getting our boats carried free of cost.- Ml along tho line instructions were given to tho officials to havo 'our boats carried along as quick as possible. When we got to Kimberlcjy tho truck was theTe, but our train was too heavily loaded to pick it up. Both at Buluwayo and Wanky the truck was the subject of delays, with tho. result that when we reached Livingstone we lost all trace of it. Tho station-master here was in u fog; he could not find it, although he had wires telling him that it was oh its way. We have now learned that it has gone on to Broken Hill, which is about 500 miles further up the line. Dick , - told the authorities that owing to the delay he would claim the right to put the race off to a later date. Now we hear that the boats will be- here to-morrow. Perhaps if *Dick' had not said that we might never have got the, boats in time to row the race. « "Uji till now (Juno SO) no articles ,bave beoii signed, and they won'tbe until Barry arrives, some time.yet. 'Dick' has got hit) ,£3OO expenses—and put it in the bank. We were met down tho line a bit •at Victoria, Falls by a few enthusiasts. There was no big display; but we found some real good sorts. Wo have found a few New Zealanders and Australians who 'are all ready to do what they can for us. The B.S.A. Company is building some huts for us down by tho river bank. From what we can sec it is a very fair course; it is not so. wide as I expected, nor is it so,straight as wo were led to txpect. There is an island along the course, abreast of' which there is much more current than in the course proper. The race will start up in the main channel, round a'bond, and finish neurly opposite tho far end of the island. The bunks 'are not very wide, with trees and shrubs along either side. We think it is about 300 ft. wide—all deep water. 'Dick , had about li stone to take off when we got here, but the weather is warm, and as ho has been out scampering over tho country shooting,, ho will soon got down. Here we experience nice warm days, as hot as in the middle of sum'nier in New Zealand,' and cool nights, about as cold at Sydney ill winter time. 'Dick' thinks that he will get into form very quick here; they all tell us ho will not need to do as much work hero as elsewhere." ' In,a postscript Floyd' adds that he has just heard that the boats have just arrived.
