D. ihouison, S.M., a man named John Charles Vincrat. aged about seventy 5-cars, was charged.with failing to complywith a maintenance order in favour .of his wife.' The order was in arrears to the amount of JEl2o—iu fact, Vincent had . not paid auything .since the' order was .;. made against .him.-He alleged in evidence (that he had uo money to pay with Hβ had formerly lived in Palmerston, but now resided at Foxtou, , . where he got his' 1 food wreturnJor gardening work at one o{, 'he-- hotels. He .had sent a power of attorney to South Africa, where the heirs . of,pno.Edward Vincent Meredith, a eon . • of .his sisters were being advertised for ' the estate being supposed to be worth '.£25,000. 'The case was struck out, it Ijo- .'. ing understood 'that it could be reopened ■in -the event of there proving to be anything in'the.South African expectation • A young man named.Daniel O'Connor a cabman,.was fined So and costs at tho Magistrate's Court to-day .for assaulting Thomas Wafers. Evidence was given .to the effect that: Waters was intoxicated whe-n O Connor struck him. severely in the face. Tho magistrate commented verv strongly oh young fellows using their Ests in such cases. He- did not like sending young; men to gaol, but unless , this ..sort oi tmng were stopped he would bo compelled to do so. In addition to , the £ne, the costs amounted to 205., the alternative being fourteen days' imprisonment.
