CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FUND.
SUCCESS -ASSURED.
SUBSCRIPTION LIST TO DATE.
Mr. Hugh J. Ward's generous offer regarding the Children's Hospital, supporting the appeal that is being mado : by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and' Mrs. T. M. Wilford) has given a great fillip to the movement and already the first £1000 has been passed. The five separate £100's havo been received and three of the eight fifties required under Mr. Ward's scheme are already safo in the bajik awaiting somewhat impatiently the remaining five, which will complete the £1000 computed by Mr. Ward as essential to the development of his idea. The three hundred pound, amounts received yesterday were contributed , by that generous citizen, Mrs. Mary Ann Williams, W.M.L. (received through Dr. Agnes Bennet), and Staples . and Co. Additional £50 subscriptions were received from Messrs. Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers, Mrs. Jacob Joseph, and Messrs. Blundell Bros. THE GOVERNOR'S HELP ANB SYMPATHY. His-Excellency the Governor invited the Mayor to discuss the project of the Children's. Hospital, and expressed great sympathy with the movement which has been started to raise .funds for its erection. He had visited the hospital (Shortly after' his arrival in Wellington, and. had beeen struck by the inadequacy of the provision _ for children there. He held the opinion that there was no more urgent want in the city than a wholesome and up-to-date children's ward as an addition to the present well-equipped institution. His Excellency 'si-cvined his intention of joining the and gave a donation of £25. MEETINC OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of all interested has been called for Thursday next, when/a committee, secretary and treasurer :will be appointed for tire formal conduct of the money-raising scheme so happily inaugurated. In view of what is to happen at the end of nexV week it is pointed out that the committee should be appointed cot later than Monday next, so that then* will be ample time to make the most complete arrangements for Children's Hospital, Saturday. By leaving this matter until Thursday it throws the .whole of the work two or three very husy people. This is a point that appears to Save been overlooked. ' THE SlTfc. It is taken for granted that the new hospital will be erected as a separate building and not as a new ward of the present hospital. Mr. Wilford state® that tliero is ample room for the building'in the/grounds of the hospital | and for economy in administration it] will necessarily have to be close to the

This will add one more valuable institution to tliose which cluster under the hill at Wellington South —the Hospital, Nurses 1 Home, Victoria Hospital for Chronic Invalids,. and Home for Aged and Needy. HOPEFUL PROSPECTS. Interviewed last evening Mrs. Wil-, ford declared herself quite confident that a few days would see tho whole of the fund in hand. "Promises of subscriptions have come in at an extraordinary rate," remarked the Mayoress, and 1 though to-day (Friday)i was an unfortunate day for, canvassing, I met not a single refusal or rebuff." Mr. Troupe, chairman of the Boys' Institute Committee, informed the Mayor yesterday that lie would cease canvassing on behalf of the Institute until the end of the month in order to avoid clashing with the Children's Hospital project. Mrs. Wilford thinks, however, that ton days' withdrawal on.the part of .the promoters of the Boys' Institute will be ample. URGENTLY REQUIRED. A LETTER FROM THE HONORARY MEDICAL STAFF. [To tho Editor.] - Sir,—With reference to the .recent proposal of the Mayoress (Mrs. T.'M. Wilford) to appeal to charity to assist in tho erection of a Children's Hospital, we, the undersigned members of the honorary medical staff, take this opportunity of testifying how urgently such a hospital is required.' In the present building it is quite impossible to adequately treat the sick children of the poor. To bring this movement within the sympathy of all classes, may it be suggested that the name of the hospital be tlie King Edward VII Memorial Hospital? This will offer to all tho opportunity of subscribing to an urgentlyrequired charity, and at the same time erecting in our midst a fitting memorial to the great peacemaker.—We are, sir, yours faithfully, > DR.
