His Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington, left for Christchuroh by the Maori last night. He was accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. Kerr Clark. ■ Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P. for Wellington Suburbs, who has been- laid up for about a week, is now much better in health, and expects to be able to take up his sessional duties again next week. Mr. W. A. Hudson, manager of Messrs. A. Cox and Co., was a p;issenger for Sydney'by the W3rrimoo last evening. Mr. Tlios. Compton, of the firm ol Messrs. Compton and Kirkwood, has j returned to Wellington after a two months' trip to Melbourne. Ovor one hundred residents of the Makara district asembled in the Makara Hall on Wednesday evening last 'to bid farewell to two of the oldest families in the district, the Robinsons—Mrs. Richard Robinson, sen., and Messrs. P. W. and R-. Robinson. Mrs. Robinsonhas lived for tho past 52 years in Makara, and was one of the most prominent of the sturdy pioneers who helped to develop that community. Tho Robinson family ' is highly respected in Makara, and their departure to take up farms up-country is much regretted by neighbouring settlers. At the farewell "social" on Wednesday, the Rev. A. L, Hansell, on behalf of the settlers and friends, presented Mrs. Robinson with a handsome souvenir handbag and a purse of sovereigns. Tho proceedings were marked with the greatest cordiality throughout. Mr. Hugh M'Leod, of the Union Company's wharf staff, was on Thursday afternoon presented yritli several handsome wedding presents by tho company's wharf officials and officers of tho coastal steamers. Mr. M'Leod left for the south by tho Mararoa on Thursday night. .
