Mr. and Mrs. Holtom gavo a musical and progressive euchre ..''entertainment a fen* evenings since, to which a large number' of friends had been invited. Mrs. Holtom, who is a finished pianist, gavo some charming selections during the evening, and the euchro tournament caused considerable excitement, as it -ended in a match Hautero versus "Tho Gorge," the latter winning easily. Mr, \Y. Smith, having decided not to go oil with tho contract for tho building of tho school here, the hoard have now let it to Mr. Smith, of Vaik&nae, who was the first to tender for it. However, as the timber has to be stacked and dried, and Mr. Smitn bas to complete some work which lie ■ lias in hand first, it may be some time before the school is commenced. It is to be hoped that Mr. J. J. Kent's letter, which appeared in The Dominion of January 30, will bear good fruit, as certainly the parents in Itikiorangi have very just cause for complaint. The.husband made an application to be allowed, under the circumstances, to sell or lease his farm, biit his requests have been refused, so that he'will have to forfeit. 'This seems a hard ease. GREYTOWN. . A meeting of tie liew District Committee of the Boy Scouts was held last Thursday afternoon, Mr. J. T. 'M. Hornsby being voted to the chair. 'Dr. Palmer, the Rev: Mr. Stowell, and Messrs. Bagley and Toogood (from Fnathcrston), Messrs. V,'. F. Roydhorae and W. Moore (from Carterton), and the.Rey,. Mr. .Page and Messrs.. E. 0. Turner and I M. Maxton (from Greytowii) are to be the District Committee, under letter from Surgeon-Captain R. 11. .'Makgill, commander in the! igorth .island. Mr. W. Moore was. elected district commander and Mr. Bagley district secretary, but the question ■of Koutmasters ,was held over ; till next . meoting. , A - sub-committee, was set up to deal with minor matters, and then at the-invitation-of the Rev.- Mr. Pago (chaplain) the committee adjourned to the vicarage, where afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Marsh.
An exhibition of "How to Graft" was given in the Greytown Fruitgrowers Company's orchard 011 Thursday afternoon by Mr.' M'Leod, their expert adviser. A large gathering of orchardlsts was present, and took great interest in the demonstration. Mr. M'Leod pruued a number of trees, explaining the reasons for so doing as ho proceeded. He -was asked numerous questions on the matter, and answered them. . j , CARTERTON. Ail interesting football match is set down for Thursday next, when the butchers and bakers of Carterton will jneet the tradesmen of the s'amo calling at Masterton in a friendly game here. The Foresters, who last year won tho United Friendly Societies' card tourney, aro making a big bid to retain tho trophy this year. So far, they can bo considered well in it, having live wins to their credit, and only one loss. On Wednesday evening .they secured ' a victory against tho Oddfellows, to tho tune of 41 to 32 games. Mr. S. Crancli, of Belvedere, who lately sold his farm there to Mr. E. Eagle, jun., puiposes taking up his' residence in Coromandcl. The Borough Council has erected a lamp in Broadway, which will be found a convenience to those travelling along this route during dark evenings. Several other side streets also require lamps, and will probably receive attention when the council's funds permit. Tho building trade here is beginning to revive,, and as better weather -approaches, tradesmen in this branch should be fully employed. . Mr; M. Lavery, tho well-known solicitor, of Carterton, has. been •ordered by his medical adviser to take a holiday for tho benefit of his health. Mr. Lavery purposes visiting the South Island, and will also spend some timo in the Hot Lakes district._ Mr. D. G. Smart, solicitor, of Wellington, _ will tako charge of Mr. Lavory's business during his absence. FEILDINC. Councillors Wheeler, Bowling', and Pearce were tho only members present at the monthly meeting of the Oroua County Council called for yesterday, and thus there was no quorum. Councillor Rcdmayne is on leave in England, Councillor Vincent is at Rotorua, Councillor Reid was engaged otherwise, and Councillor Burrell's recent bereavement prevented his attendance. The meeting was consequently adjourned until Monday next. "St. Paul's" is the name' just adopted for ttio local Presbyterian Church. Tho ' Feilding Borough Council has agreed to pay £500 towards'the cost of Menzies Fora Bridge on condition that the Oroua County Council accept that a-s the final contribution without reference to a commissioner.
At tho monthly meeting of tho Follding Women's Christina Temperance Union resolutions were passed hearing on the referendum on the Bible in schools question, on tho' future policy of the New Zealand Alliance, and on the acl.iou of the Government concerning bookmakers, the list-named being specially approved.
