(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, August 6. ' The report of- the headmaster sub-; mitted to the monthly meeting of tho College Street. School Committeo last evening showeiTthat tliero wore 401 names on the roll, tho average attendance for the month bejng 382 illness amoiig the children having seriously affected tho average. . The . sale of work in aid of the funds of tho : school resulted in a profit "of; £9 Ss. 'Sd., which had been placed ,to the-credit of the committee's account. -The sum received from scholars for tho half-year amounted to £3 4s. 3d. Hearty, votes of thanks were passed to all who had assisted to mako the sale- of wort'a success. ■

' A' rumour, was set afloat 'yesterday afternoon that. Joseph Poweika • liad again escaped. It is suggested- that tho rumour gained currency through there being a coiiplo'of fires yesterday, morning, one in the Kairanga and. one in town.

The local Lodge of Oddfellows, M.TJ., was held last night, when there was a good attendance. Bro. C. J. Setter, N.G.,. presided. Two new members were elected. A degree _ lecture was given by the N.Cr;, assisted by P.O. Bro. F. W. Tcttitt, and seven members wero advanced to the White Degree. A considerable 'amount of routine business was transacted.

A meeting- of tho District Scout Committee was held last evening, Captain Mostyn Jones presiding. Tho question of boundaries was discussed, and a sub-conunittee appointed to go into the matter. It was resolved to endeavour to secure the co-operation of committees in otliw districts, inaluding Woodville, Pahiatua, Levin, Otaki, etc. It it proposed to hold a scout field day when all corps are fully organised.

The Palmerston Fire Board has. taken over tho neiv station from the contract tor, Mr. '0. W- Blackburn, and tho brigade will at cneo take up its quarters in the premises.
