FEILDING. The death occurred this week of one of the early settlers of the Dominion in Mr. John Albert Bensemann, of Waituna West, at the age of 73., Mr. Benseraunn arrived iu Nelson with his parent in 1543 from Germany, and lived in Nelson [for 3(i years, being in'business, for. fifteen of these. He then proceeded to the Feilding district, taking up farming near Marton for a lew, years, and then/ going on to his farm at Waituna. The annual meeting of the Feilding •Presbyterian Church was. held last evenThe revenue from all sources during the past year was .£7OO, contributions to missions (in which increased interest had been shown) being over one-tenth of the total. The roll at tho beginning of the year was 121 members, and, at tho end, 132. The minister (Jiev. George Budd) had conducted 20 marriages, 12 baptisms, and 10' funerals. The Women's Missionary Union lias 22 members.. The annual debt reduction collection amounted to £89 lis. Od.' The Sunday. School had an average attendance of eleven teachers .and 78. scholars (40 girls and 38 boys)., The school building fund had reached .£134, and the library contained 300 books. - ' SHANNON, There was more than the usual amount of merriment on Tuesday night in the Druids', Hall, when Mr. Gundy moved k"That women, should not compete' with men for business or professional occupations." Mr. R. Law supported Mr. Gundy, and the negative was taken by, .Miss Silvester and Miss - Masom Messrs. Hensraan, Malcolm,' Judd, -and Galland also supported the motion, ' while the .ladies' cause was manfully championed by M€ssrs. Gunning, Gibb, Logan, ,Clay-, ton, and Bernsten. Oh a vote being taken,, the motion was defeated by 3*o votes to 16. Meanwhile, it is' alleged . that a specks of if not "Tammanyism'' at least coercion or intimidation, was' ■ brought to bear on the married ■ men— ;and .some of the bachelors, who (it, is 'whispered) voted-for the motion against their convictions and for the sake of domestic harmony. Next Tuesday the ladies will hold a "social," presumably to_ celebrato' their victory;' Messrs. Gibb,' Gunning, and Selby will represent the -local society in their forthcoming contest with the Y.M.C.A., Levin. . A "social" is to be tendered to. Mr.,J; R. Stansell and family, on the occasion of their leaving this district to reside in Karori. '..''. •■■ . WOODVILLE. . The result of the appeal to-the Rugby. Union in the case of H. Monteith is that the Danneyirko Sub-union reopened the matter and disqualified' the player in question for one year. (The Woodville Football Club are 'also being called .upon to show cause why their senior, team should not lie disqualified for playing Monteith after having received. notifiqa : tion of his suspension. In a junior football match' at Danne-. virke yesterday a player named P. Burlace had his collar-bone broken. ■
