INVESTMENT SHARES. A singlo transaction in New Zealand Paper Mills shares was the only business 'in investment shares recorded yesterday. The buying orders continue numerous, but sellers are scarce. The consumption of spirits, wine, and beer for the- past two years compare as under:— ,■.-.■■■.■-, . , , •1908.' '1909. ' ' ■' ' ' Gallons. Gallons. 5pirit5'...................... 751,605 719.138 Wine ;..... 149,107 138,699 '.Beer ....;..... 271,780 '. 252,320 .■' . ■l.r 1,172,492 1,110,157 There was a, slight falling-off in the consumption last year, due, no doubt, to the slump experienced early in the .year. The,duty, paid on the above for the past two: years was as under:— ' . 1908. ~1909. Spirits ~..........'.;„..'... 601,284* 575,310 Wine '.! ; 42,797 . 38,749 • • Beer.. ..........,.„, '.27,178 25,232. .'..'■.' ' 671,259' , 639,291 Worked put at per head for the male and. female population' over 15 years of aeo. including Maoris, the rate last year was £1' 17s. lljd., as. compared with £2 Is. 2J,d. in 1908. Spirits contributed £1 16s. 2d., as against £1 19s. 2d. in the previous year. In 1901 the consumption of spirits waa 596,073 gallons, or an average of 2.47 gallons per'hoad, while last year the consumption .was. 719,138 gallons, equal, to 2.26 gaUons per head. In the past twenty years the consumption ,of spirits has more than doubled, The consumption of -ale and beer shows a tendency, to decline. , In 1589 it amounted to 274,427 uaUons. ■ and drooped in 1896 to 182,080-gallons, gradually rising to 279,108 gallons ' in 1907. . ■ The consumption of tea:shows-remark-able growth, and the total consumed now is 'double what, it was in 1889. The tea taken for consumption last year was .7,302,3101b., eaual to 7.08ib. per head of the entire population, , while so recently as' 1904, it.was 5,22516681b., or 5.801b. per head. The increase has been most marked since the duty was abolished. ',•'■' .; The - consumption of tobacco shows steady growth, year by year. during tho past twenty. years. . The total consumption last year was 2,278,0351b.', equal to i7.171b. per head, while in 1908 it .was 2,247,1011b., or 7.331b. per head. The consumption -in;. 1889. 1.157,3101b., or. 6.541b. per head.' '• The' total - Customs •' dnty obtained from'tobacco last'year was £395:794, or £1 4s. 10Jd. per head.' . Tho consumption of.' cigars,, cigarettes, and snuff for recent years arc not civen in the return, but there; has apparently been a phenomenal growth/principally in cigarettes/judging by the amount of duty collected. Last, year the duty totalled £163,110, equal to 10s. 3Jd. per head, as 'against £169,027, or lis. OJd. per.bead in : the -previous year. In .1904 the duty per head , amounted to only Bs. sd; per head. Cigarette' smoking is a firmly-fixed habit with the hoys and young men, and tho consumption is likely to increase. ' '■ ' :.
