NEWS AND NOTES.

THE POLICE FORCE >..'MR. -ARNOLD SATISFIED.' ".. •Mi'. Arnold, ■ member.- for Duncdin Central; who was. largely responsible for .the ■'Police Commission set up last year, made a statement in. regard to tho police force at'tho conclusion of'-his speech in die '.Financial Debate last evening. . Mr. Arnold said - ho know ■ that tboro -were those who were anticipating that during this session he. might express his dissatisfaction at that which had been done, and that "things said in this Houso wiU. be readable.". But not only himself, but the members of the police force throughout the Dominion, were very gratified at what had been done by the Ministry in regard to the police force. With one or two exceptions the police force and those interested in it had absolute, con, fidenco in their present head. They recognised that everything had not been done th'at should be done, or .would have to be .done, but time was needed for- reforms, and they recognised' that the head of the. force had not the pursestrings pf the - Treasury. They recognised that with; reasonable time almost every -reform that he had'asked for years ago would be provided for them. He did 'not think it .was|iiecessary that any person should bo appointed as a chief inspector of police, but if the Government could see their way clear to give greater powers to the inspectors in the various districts, the whole mutter would bo met ■in a much more satisfactory way than it was under the lato administration, or than it could bo mot by having a chief inspector wondering from one part of the Dominion to -another, }: TRIBUTES TO MR. BOLLARD. : '■/'The-genial member for Eden (Mr. Bollard) camo in for some very complimentary references from two of his Auckland colleagues .last night. ; - "The people of Auckland," said Mr. G-lbver, "would' take' his word on -anything. "Both as.regards his public and: private : - actions," he said, "he has exemplified tho highest principles pf honesty." ,'(Applause.) "We fought: out the greatest battlo ever, fought in New Zealand," he continued. ... - Sir-'Joseph:'What about Waterloo? •' , Mr. Lawry: You aro /trying to ■ get me off'the track. (-Laughter.). r ;'Continuing,. Mr, Lawry said: "Ho .(Mr. /Bollard)- was-on one side and I was on the other.' .And. we won!" &;'J^ n !j er^'-^vllo i' won? - (Laughter.) . .■Mr. Lawry; : Wc (pointing, to himself) and the-women won. (Mora laughter.) '--In. conclusion,. .Mr. Lawry said that his remarks- were to'illustrate, the- factthat.,the: more he and .Mr. Bollard differed the more., closely was cemented the great friendship which had always ox. istcd between them. CHAIRMANSHIP OF COMMITTEES. .The Government has "abandoned its intention to hold another' caucus'of the. party to discuss the question of tho Chairmanship of Committees. Tho former caucus was not marked by u spirit of sweet concord, and it is understood that the Prime Minister will now move in tho House that a certain member bo elected as; Chairman, without . inviting further argument■;in caucus. It is considered not- unlikely that Mr. Hanan, ; member for Invercargill, will be nominated by Sir Joseph Ward, hut the claims of at least one other Government member are understood to be under consideration. -:,'.;.- A.NELSON NEED. "" A .petition of .Nelson ratepayers has been . presented' through the Hon. R. In .accordance; with a;ballpt, .in; which !tho principle ;was endorsed by 3701 votes to 172,; equal and direct' departmental representation' ■ for each; branch of the service will be grant-' ,ed : both, on the. biennial conference, and the executive council of the. Ho suggested;, that some of the members interested in .the industry should combino 'ami see that*something was done in this matter. On.November 25 last tho Prime ..Minister, in replying to -a' deputation, said-that if the spirit of the'report could be defied and duty evaded by bringing in long .lengths of foreign timber and .'cutting them up in. this country, ]je thought that members of the deputation would agree' with him that the Government would not permit that. Tho Government; - however, had dono nothing since.- ' It was high time-'Hint something was done to. give effect to the very valifable reopmmehdations of the commission. ADJUTANTS' EXAMINATIONS. "various districts;. (2) has headquarters set .any standard' of examination, "and has that standard Upon .• communicated ■ 'to,, tlio various district commanders, or are the various district commanders sofctinir' Umfc .

INTERJECTIONS." Air.'Arnold (Dunedjn Central) stated in tho Houso last (.veiling that though ho had been in the House eleven or twelve sessions ho had never known a'Financial Debate in which tliero were so many unpleasant interjections during members' speeches, so much party bickering and contradiction, rs Jiud taken plnco in tho present debate. If such . debates were conducted in a more .moderate spirit, each member, looking only to tho welfare of the Dominion and constituency ha ro'presentfKl, it would bo much hotter for all concerned. OCEAN MAIL SERVICES. -Mr. Bollard said last night that he wished .to. warn the. Postmaster-Genera! against 'committing the. country to a mail service via Vancouver for any length of time, because he happened to know that the United States Government was. not prepared to allow Canada to capture the whole of the Australasian trade, and a San Francisco service' calling at Auckland ; would soon be reestablished. WHAT MEMBERS WANT TO KNOW. llr-Nowman is. to ask tho Minister for Justice whether it is his intention to mnko additional appointments to the Commission of Peace. He states that much inconvenience to.tho public throughout-tho Dominion is caused by .the'.delay in making these appointments, inoro especially in 'tho' country dislriots, where, on account of closur settlement, a large .iiicrcaso in population hits lately taken place. Mr. Hogg will ask the Government when it is 1 proposed'.to .invite tenders for tho erection of tho new Courthouse at Mastertbn, for which provision was made on .last-year's Estimates. . . -'Mr. ■ Okey is asking: .the Minister for Agriculture whether, in selling the. male 'progeny of' the different.breeds of cattle imported, by the Government, for the purpose .of improving the breed of the dairy herds of the' Dominion, he will see that diie consideration .is'given to favrly distributing the cattle throughout the dairying districts, so. that tmvbest results may ;be .obtained for tho expenditure. , 'jottings.
