Tho "Manchester Guardian" (Liberal), in commenting on the Manitoba Grain Growers' Association's memorial of protest against tho Canadian tariff, says it shows that tho influenco of the West is at length making itself felt against the manufacturing interests which have controlled Canada's fiscal policy for thirty years. The future of Canada lies in the West, and if it declares for Free-trade the politicians will quickly listen. The "Westminster Gazette" and other Liberal papers make similar comments. The "Morning Post" (Conservative) says its increasing prosperity,. consequent on the influx of American settlers, has modo the agricultural West less anxious-for preference. The American Government and the trusts are anxious to take advantage of Great Britain's refusal of preference to convert Western Canada into an annexe for . the American industrialist. The 'Tost" declares that tho Americans are ready to make a small sacrifice to divert Canadian trade from Great Britain.to themselves. . CANADA'S GERMAN SONS. SIR W. LAURIER ON ANGLOGERMAN RELATIONS. (Rec. August i, 11.30 p.m.) Ottawa, August i. ' Replying to an address from a German delegation at Regina (Assiniboia), who pledged that their sons would join the Canadian Navy, the Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, said ho did not believe in the danger of a waT between Germany and Great Britain. ... ''''■ < Why in the name of common sense and international relations, he asked, should Germany quarrel with Great Britain, her best friend?
