THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Br Ucencok.s The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's mooting commences at Caulfteld on Saturday next. l'icotre, who used to race at the Mirnmar pony meetings, has had her name changed to Carnation since she arrived in Australia.
Mr. C. O'Connor, the well-known starter, left for Christchurch last night by tho Maori, and will be present at the Grand National meeting.
Ifcrrio Oliver has been placed in work again in Now South Wales after three months' spell. He is in charge of J. Burns.
Among the passengers for Lyttelton by the Maori last night was tho well-known hurdle horseman,. A. M'Coiinss.
Enngikapua continues to do good work at the Hutt, and one morning recently he surprised his trainer by showing up well in a gallop with Ponates.
The jumpers, Jlaidi, Arclight, Nero, and Forest, were taken to Lyttelton yesterday. Maidi and Arclight were, in charge of H. Jackson, and J. Griffiths looked after the latter pair. Nero has very doubtful-looking joints in front, but little Forest, who is for the sale-ring, was looking remarkably well.
H. Jackson has not yet deoided whether Maidi will start in the Grand National Steeples or not, but in all probability the roan mare will bo withdrawn from that event, and started in the Enfield Steeplechase on Tuesday next.
Trainer G. Price took Nyland to Riccorton by the Maori last night. Tho big fellow looked as if he had done plenty of work, and apparently he carries condition enough to see out a fast mile. His appearance is sure to gain him many friends in the Winter Cup, and after galloping at Riccarton it can safely be reckoned that ho will shorten in price for the Cup on Tuesday. ■ • .
The crack jockey, A. Oliver, wentsouth last . night to ride N/land in the Winter Cup. Oliver's success in big events last season was really wonderful, and if he succeeds in pnl'.ing off the big Kiccarton event he will have ridden the winner three years in succession. His other, successes were gained on Penates and North East. After doing ' the C.J.C. .meeting, Oliver will return to Palmerston North, where he has several en?agcments to fulfil at the forthcoming Hunt Club meeting. Immediately after this he will take the bont for Sydney, where he will be riding during the spring meetings. Ho hopes to return in time for the Feilding meeting on November 30. .
It is definitely decided that the Fordell mentor, F. Tilley, will leave for Sydney on' August -19. and will take with him Milan, I.udy Lucy, Equitas, and Master Laddo. The first named has been backed for the Melbourne. Cup by her owner, Mr. F. Preston, so it may be anticipated New Zealand will be well represented with Milan, Lady Lucy, and Master Soult to do battle for the Dominion. Equitas does not stay too well, and will probably be kept to middle distances. As regards Master Laddo, it is not known how the half-brother,to Frisco will shape or what distances will suit him, for he- raced very littlo last season, but Tilley evidently holds a very high opinion of him, as he took him to several meetings to get him accustomed to travellings and the- racecourse excitement, etc. WOODLANDS HUNT CLUB, (By Toleeraph.—Press Association.)
