TJio Mayor is giving a dinner in the Grand Hotel this evening to the members and chief officers of the City Council.

Mr. A. K. KcL-iiot has resigned his connection with the Australian Alliance Assurance Company, and accepted tho position of director of the Norwich Union X-'iro Office.

Captain G. G. Smith, Eoyal Naval Registrar, leaves for Lyttolton this evening on Naval Reserve business.

Mr. H. A. do Courcy Browne, the nenly-apjioinled traffic manager for the Christchurch City Tramways, was a passenger from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday, lie has held several responsible positions in connection with the Sydney tramways, and comes to Now Zealand highly recommended by Mr. Kneeshaw, superintendent of tho Government Tramways in Sydney. In that city, says Mr. Browne, the tramway traffic is rapidly increasing. The total number of passengers carried last year was 192,000,000, and this year tho number was expected to exceed 200,000,000. There arc over a thousand enrs engaged in the service. Mr. Browne leaves for Lyttelton this evening.

Mr. Duncan Stout, second son of Sir Robert Stout, has won the gold medal for medicine in Guy's College, and has been appointed house physician in Guy's Hospital, London.

Mr. H. Lang, who is to engage in cod-fishing operations at the Chatham Islands for the Chatham Islands Fishing Company, was a passenger from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday.

Mr. Cerruty, who for some years acted as purser of Huddart-Parker steamers trading to New Zealand, and who has of late been located in Australia, arrived from S}-dney by the Moeraki yesterday, having been appointed to succeed Mr. Daniel Ryan as chief clerk in the Wellington office.

Mr. I. Salek, of Wellington Terrace, and his sou; Mr. A. M. Salck, were passengers from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. .

Mr. T. M. Donovan, of the Royal and West's Pictures Proprietary, is slowly recovering from severe nervous prostration which has laid him aside for tho last five months. He is now able to take carriage exercise, and after a spell in the country he purposes taking a trip to tho South Sea Islands.

Mr. Robert Rigg, who is an old and esteemed resident of Masterfcon, and who is at.present a member of the Borough Council, has decided to take up his residence in Wellington. As he does not wish to ■' put the . ratepayers to tho expense, of a by-election, he will visit Mnsterton for meetings of the council whenever convenient. A very pleasant function took place at the residence of the Mayoress (Mrs. Coradine) this week, when about fifty members and friends of tho Methodist Ladies' Guild assembled to say good-bye to Mrs. Rigg On behalf of the ladies, Mrs. Z. M. Hoar presented Mrs. Rigg, who has been, an active member of the guild, with a silver entree dish. . ■

Mr. Nat Gould, of Nelson, is in Wellington in connection with the Auctioneers' Conference.

Dr. V. G. Griffin, who came to Wollington ns surgeon of the Rakaia, signed off the vessel yesterdaj', and leaves for Dunedin. ' ■

Mr. J. B. Beid, of Christchurch, who has been on a trip to England, is returning to Now Zealand by the Athenic, due in Wellington on September 5.

The death occurred, yesterday of Mrs. Thorley, wife of Mr. G. T. Thorley, of Khandallah. Deceased was 46 years of age.'

At Palmerston last evening Mr. Willium Gill, tho retiring Wellington manager of the Alliance Assurance Company, recoived from the Wellington district agents a presentation of an illuminated address, case ■of pipes, and tobacco pouch, and a silver tea and coffee service, and a gold chain for Mrs. Gill. The presentations were made by Mr. Fred. Howletu, the oldest agent of the company. Mr. C. R. Smith, tlie new Wellington manager, was also present.— Press Association.
