■ NOTES AND COMMENTS. CBi U&ENCOH.j Four horses were on board the Tarawera, which' arrived from Napier yesterday. They were Corazon, Full Cry, Oakley, and Amato-all bound-for Biccartou. Trainer V. Collcllo is of opinion that Corazon has improved by the couple of races which he had at Trentham, and the 'chostnnt is expected to run well at the Canterbury Jockey Clubs nieohnK next week. T. Pritohard wns offered tho ride on Araato in tlie Winter Cup, hut he had already contracted to ride Penza.
Hydrant, who is engaged in the Grand National Hurdles, will be shipped to Riccarton by the Mararoa to-morrow night in charge of H. Pritchard. Hydrant ran second to Cuiraguo in the Grand National of 1008.
Moriarty, whom Mr. 13. J. Watt soM at a good price last season, has boon . * consistent failure since leaving New Zealand, and seenis unable to strike form. At Epsom (Victoria; on .Inly Si lie finished out of a place in a poor field in a .£SO race. Another New Z«aUiiid;bi'e'l animal in Waihuka won the event in question. ...
As announced elsewhere, tho death occurred at Blenheim on Saturday last of Mr. George Cheeseuinii, formerly a wellknown racehorse owner. During the last couple of years the deceased had been practically retired from the turf, and only ran a horse or two at tho small Blenheim meetings. One of theso was HiUsoug, who won three events at tlw last Wairau nieaiujj.
Two horses lillely to be spoken of a good deal between now and November nro Jfr. Cc. D. Greenwood's pair, Danube and Forme'den. Both are reported to huvß wintered well, und have- grown and furnished a lot. Danube in particular has thickened a groat deal, and should' make a sterling three-year-old. ,
At the C.J.C. meeting next week there appears to be every reason to supubse that tho fields .in the three principal events will I)o very large. Most of tho horses aro already Oh.tho ground, and ore getting ..through, their tasks in a satisfactory manner.
The Freedom gelding Wauchope continues to (jleass in his training efforts on tho Riccarton tracks. A private telegram from the South stated that the gelding did the best gallop of tho Winter Cup candidates yesterday morning.
Southern advices state that Eurus was coughing after his return from Trentham. , This, of course, will prejudice his chances at Riccarton.
The way in -which the money is coming for North East makes it appear as if the big chestnut will start favouritt. In the Winter Cup, despite his heavy burden. W.' Young, who is to have the mount, will probably adopt different tactics at Riccarton from those he used at Trentham.; At the latter meeting the horse was rushed to the front, and soon had a gap between himself and the field. He was, however, unable to see out the journey, and seemed rather fortunate to finish fourth: On that account the same plans are not likely to be., adopted at Riccarton, though -firm going would make a lot of difference. .
Advices tfrom the Waikanae- stud state that Olivette foaled on Satnrday morning, some eleven days before 'her time, and consequently her foal was a yearling on Monday.
Among the horses shipped South by tho Mararoa last night were:—lney (J. Lowe); Wimmera (T. Quinlivan); Jlerrie Zealand (J. Russell); Lionheart (M. Wright); Aornngi and Appin (W. Stone); Penates, Penza, Mon Ami, and Mediterranean (C.. Pritchard). ■ : •
Kaitnna, by Glenogle, who is engaged in liack hnrdle races at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, arrived from Blenheim by the Pnteena Inst evening, and was transhipped to the Mararoa for tyttelton. . Almost the only Winter Cup candidates that are not already at Riccarton are Nyland and Royal Marine. The former goes South to-night, and Royal Marine will probably be shipped to-mor-row night. FIXTURES. August 3.—Woodlands Hunt Club Annual Steeplechase. . . August 9, 11,.. and 13.-C.J.C. Grand , National.
