STATE AND FRIENDLY-.SOCIETIES. By Telegraph-Press Association—OoDjTlehl (Kec. August 2, 10.30 p.m.) London, August 2. A thousand delegates, including anumber from Australia, were present at the annual gathering of the Foresters' High Court at. Birmingham. The Chief Ranger,.in the.course..of his speech, said that two and a half million days of sickness were paid for annually by the order in the United Kingdom. The proposed State insurance against sickness and invalidity would. only be successful if tho friendly societies- and tho State were mutually satisfied. The societies would only accept the responsibilities of administration.if their rights of self-management wore continued. ■ '
The Chief Forester said he was glad that the Chancellor of the Exchequer was considering the question of exempting friendly societies' benefits when estimating the incomes of applicants for old age pensions.
