■It is reported that the Broken Hill Proprietary mine was; originally discov--'ered by Charles Rasp, a boundary rider, on the Mount Gipps Sheep Station, who, with 'Mr. George M'Culloch, the overseer, and .other,station .employees, set to work: to raise tin. There were fourteen shares in all, but soon fcur of them were parted.with for. .£2OO. This was early in the 'eighties. But ; the . discovery of chloride .of silver altered the .position completely, and tho: value of the property rose by leaps and hounds. In 1885 the company was • formed, as above. Smelting works were eredted in 1886, and the .production of silver proved so enormous that in 1888.the .£2O shares, with d£l9 paid, were selling at from .£2BO to .£3OO. At present the company is possessed; of one of'the'most complete and costly mining, : smelting, . and refining plants in the world, the original outlay upon, which has been written down out of'.profits, to about one-third. .For the sale of the Block 10 the company received ',£912,000 in shares; for. that.of .the Block .14, .£432,000 in shares .was received; while from the British' Broken Hill Company, .£576,000 in cash, and £100,000 in shares, came to the Proprietary Company. At present the : area •of ' the mine is 120 acres, .forming main. lease ■■ at Barrier Ranges,' N.S.W., and. 683 acres. comprising '.. the■ outside leases'. 1 The. properties are: held under mineral lease and gold lease.'
