The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) left for Auckland on Saturday. Yesterday ho attended the funeral of the late Mr. F. E. Baume. Sir Joseph will lay tho foundation stone of the new post office at Auckland to-day. He has arranged to return to Wellington to-morrow afternoon. Dr. J. 31. Mason, formerly Chief Health Officer in New Zealand, is' returning to the liouiiniuii by tho lonic, which is due here on August 9. Mr. W. Wallis, manager of the New Zealand and African Steam Ship Company, returned from Christchurch yesterday morning. Mr._ J. Buttle, general manager of the New Zealand insurance Company, will be a* passenger for Sydney by the Maheuo to-day. . Fruitgrowers and nurserymen throughout the Dominion will regret to hear uf the death of Mr. C. J. Goodman, nurseryman and fruitgrower, Baimsdale, Victoria. The deceased BC-ntle-man, who has made many visits to iNew Zealand, was very well known and very highly esteemed. His enterprise was manifested in having established one of tho finest fruit tree nurseries, in Australia, and in addition spent uracil of his energies, in' erecting a canning and jam factory. In addition to canning fruit, the cultivation of the asparagus on a very large scale was entered into both for marketing and canning, the beds being probably the most prolific in the Commonwealth.
Mr. Hugh Toneycliffe, sen., who had lived in Timaru thirty-six years, and had reached the great age of 974 years, died last week. He came to New. Zealand in 1875, in the ship Waikato, and, landing at Lyttelton, he came down to Timaim in tlie .steamer Bruce. He loaves three sons and three daughters, 47 grandchildren, and 27 great-grand-' children.
Mr. T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner of Crown Lands at Napier, who succeeds Mr. F. W. Flanagan as Commissioner of Crown Land 3 for Canterbury, is expected in Christchurch to-day. Mr. C, R. Holland, Chief Draughtsman at Auckland, succeeds Mr.' Brodrick at Napier. .
Captain Davidson and Sergeant Gebbie, of the Dannevirke Rifles, have been awarded twelve years' service medals, -which have been forwarded to the officer commanding the Fifth Wellington Rifle Battalion (LieutenantColonel Tate), for presentation.
The. funeral'of-the late Mr. F. E. Baume took place at Auckland yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in tho 'Waikumete cemetery. The procession, •■ in which numbers of Masonic lodges took part, was an exceedingly' long one, ami among those who attended wore the; Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward), and many other members of Parliament and representa.tives of public bodies.
Mr:' \Ym. Jamieson has resigned his position as clerk, treasurer, and returning officer to the Selwyn (Canterbury) County Council, . whieli ho has held for thirty-three years. The council has granted him throe months' leave of absence, on full salary.—Press Association. -
