(From Oar Special Correspondents.) __» . OTAKI. A liorso whicli strayed on tho railway lino near To Hdro on Thursday .night met with an untimely death, being caught by the last train from Wellington. In consequence tho train was delayed while tho animal was removed. The infant child of Mrs. Taylor, of Parannraumu, died hero on Wednesday night. The new lamps recently purchased by the Road Board from the Levin Borough ■Council aro being erected in various places in tho town. •Tho Phil. Walsh Dramatic Company appeared hero on Thursday night to a fair' audience,. the piece staged being "Tho American Tramp." About 1000 acres of bush land is to bo cleared at Manakau this year, and some twenty men havo started on the work. Tho Methodists of Otaki are arranging to hold a carnival in September to raise funds for the purposo of erecting a parsonage.'

Miss Lynch, head teacher .■ of the Makowhai School, has resigned, and tho resignation is also announced of Miss V. Wilson, second assistant at the Taihape School. In connection with the borough water supply, tho Mayor (Mr. Goodbeherc) states that ho had written to the authorities with a view to having telephonic communication with, the reservoir. The reply stated that it would be necessary to erect a set of poles to the reservoir at a cost of £70, with an annual upkeep of £21. The council lias now referred the matter back to the Telephone Dopartment with a view to getting a cheaper connection. '

Members of tho Roman Catholic community of tho Kimbolton district aro feeling very grateful to Mr. and Mrs. T. Scoble Cornish for tho substantial sum of £20 which they have been able to present as a result of the production of "Jack, tho Boy Scout," and "My Relations," at Kimbolton, after, the two nights' season in Feilding. Our highland township now has £150 towards the building fund for a Catholic Church.

Whilst tho. lfeilding' Borough. Council was considering tho proposal to erect a Municipal Opera House its subcommittee got Mr. Clere, of Wellington,' to furnish sketch plans. The council is,now changing its mind in favour of -a combined Town Hall and Municipal Chambers, and the question now is: How far is it committed to Mr. Clerc, as. councillors want to invite competitive designs for the proposed buildings? On tho motion of Councillors Pirani and Clapham it was resolved that Mr. Cloro be asked what he considers tho council owes him for tho work which he has already done in connection with the proposed Opera House, and what he will charge for a pencil sketch, specification, and estimate of \ Town Hall as now proposed, and what his total charge will bo.if he carries-out the whole of the architect's work in connection with the erection of a Town Hall.

On leaving Kiinbolton, after six years in farming there, to take up their residence in Palraerston, Mr. and Mrs.' E. H. Crabb received a presentation from the Presbyterians of the district.

, Peilding district has had a full week of heavy frosts and sunshine.

-It is the intention of tho postal' authorities to instal tho metallic circuit in tho Peilding Telephone Exchange.

The tender- of Messrs. Sollit Brothers has been accepted by Mr. A. James, architect, for the re-ercction of tho Bunnythorpe Hotel, recently destroyed by fire. There wero twelve tenders received. The building-will contain eighteen rooms.

"■" A doputation- from Palmerston, .consisting of Messrs. F. W. Mayo and J. Nairn, waited on the chairman of the Wanganiu Education Board, of Feilding, in reference to a proposal to erect a school in the western part of Palmerston. In reply,, the chairman (Mr; Pirani) pointed out that ho had proposed the erection of a school in the locality suggested five years ago, but the difficulty was that the residents did not see their way to raise-a portion of the sum required for tho' site of tho school. Since then, however, the leases: of a number of education reserves in that portion of the town had fallen in,,, and ho suggested that the Wellington School Commissioners should he approached and asked to allow one of the sections to bo exchanged for a site agreed upon. Mr. X Lethbridgo, one of the commissioners who meet on 'Wednesday next, has promised to give tho matter his assistance.

SHANNON.

The weather for the.past week has been dry and seasonable,, with sharp frosts at night and sunshine during the day.

■Tho friends of Mr. P. W. Denton, who .is at present an. inmate of Otaki Hospital, will be glad to hear that lie is progressing favourably.

Mir. J. R- Stansell, who for a number of years has been resident in Shannon, is leaving shortly to enter into business at Karioi.

A meeting of the' Carterton United Friendly Socioties' Council was held on Friday evening, Bro. J. 51. Nicholts being in the chair. An application from the Oddfellow's Lodge for a grant of £5 from the Benevolent. Fund for a brother in need was granted. ' It was decided to continue the affiliation to tho Wellington Council, and Bro. 0. D. Robertson was appointed delegate. • Tho movement to establish a boot factory hero advanced another stago on Thursday evening, when a meeting of those interested appointed a committee to canvass the district to ascertain tho quantity of shares that would be taken up.. . A salo of £300 undor tho auspices of tho Wairarapa Terminating Building Society will take place en Thursday evening next here: ' Mr. H. Poters, sen., 'of Waihakeke, who iias resided in tho district lor a number of years, is leaving this week to take, up his residence in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. E. Martin and family leave here at the end of tho week for Kaitawa, where they purpose following farming pursuits. During their fourteen years' residence here th'o family, have made many friends. On' Thursday week the local Gun Club will hold a competition for trophies presented by tho Colonial Ammunition Company, Auckland, and Mr. W. Howard Booth, Carterton.

CREYTOWN.

The meeting of the Groytown Boy Snouts' Committee, that was to bo heltl last Thursday, has again been postponed owing to so many of tho members being out of the district. The meeting is to be held next Thursday. Further progress is to be made at a meeting of the Mount Hector Track Committee, which will probably bo held on August 11. The "Magic Ruby" was again staged hero by the local Glco Club and Orchestral Society, on Thursday evening last,' to a very good house. Tho performance was. given as a complimentary benefit to the conductor, Mr.'H..T. Rees.
