MR. A. W. HOGG'S REPLY.
Sir, —Mr. James M'Cardle says he is . proud of tho fact that he is the son of the Hon. W. AV. M'Cardlo, M.L.C. With , that I have no concern, although I. like i (o see a wise son honour his father. But when he says I am holding his . father responsible for the dealings of lus.familv ho does me an injustico. in no way have I endeavoured to connect'the largo Native land transactions of the M'Cardlo family, who figure, either by accident or design, as "M'Gardales" in a Government return, with the gentleman who occupies a seat in the Legislative Council, and with whom I. have always been, personally, if not politically, on the best of terms. Mr., James M'Ca.rdle, by venturing into print and spelling the name properly, having repudiated the disguise, provided by the Native Department in the return submitted' to Parliament, and boldly acknowledged that tho "M'Cardales" of tho King Country are identical with the M'Cardles of the Forty-Mile Bush, I merely assisted him further by disclosing his distinguished lineage. Beyond' this, family disclosures are not required, and ,tbe exploits and experiences of an unsettled settler narrated by. Mr. James AT Cardie would not bo interesting were it not that by his admission of buying and. selling Crown land at Ballanco and Pongaroa he proclaims himself a speculator. He says he is the oldest of a family of nine. Seeing that two-thirds of that family have secured sixteen thousand acres of the King Country, does it not occur to him that if the remainder of the Native land is allowed to be alienated tin this manner, the number of families that New Zealand can accommodate will be very limited?—l iim, eto., ; A. W. HOGG.
