PETROLEUM AND THE GOVERNMENT.
Sir, —I have read with somo interest . t"hfc> telegrams relative to the request for tho _ Government to advance the Taranaki Petroleum Company sufficient money to start a refinery, or for the Government to erect a refinery and distil for all and sundry. I have no sym- 1 patliy for such business,'but ihero is a legitimate direction in which tho Government may mid has assisted tho industry. I ajlude to the prosecution of tho Geological Surveys. Part has been done in Taranaki, Gisborne, and Greymouth in connection with the location of likely petroliferous country. I'judge that the proposed £10,000 wouM bo much bettor spent in geological ' survoy work at the present; as New Plymouth is not the only part of New Zealand in which oil will be got. There is a much larger area of petroliferous country in New, Zealand than most people imagine,' mid therefore the. "Government should assist in tho first instance by survey and then protect the industry from internal and external dangers, so acting in fairness to the nliole Dominion.—l am, etc., WILLLAM E. AKROYD. Gisborne,-July . 27. '
