During At. Gardiner's absence iiv Australia, Koran and other members of his team will .be in charge of James Hall. Koran will race at Marten and Bulls in September. News by yesterday's mail states that the French Grand National Steeplechase, rim at Paris on July 18, was won' by the Fmgiish horse Jerry M. The ''Loudon "Sportsman" says the victory of Mr. Assheton-Smith's colours was well received, and there was loud cheering from the public outside, while the .stewards' crowded round the owner and his friends to express their satisfaction at the success of an English horse. It was recalled that Jerry M. had run second for the race twelve months ago, and though he made some compensation by winning the Prix des Drags on' the following Friday, it was felt to be quite in accordance with tho fitness of things that he should score in the big steeplechase this season. .31. Gardiner left for Sydney yester-' day in charge of Crncinella, who is engaged in the Metropolitan Handicap at tho Australian Jockey Club's Spring meeting. Gardiner also tool; a two-year-old that will bo entered for the (iimcrnck Stakes, etc' Crncinella looks very well at the present time, and her trainer expresses the opinion that she is better now than ever before. The steeplechaser Nero has a doubtful tendon, but lie was on the tracks at Hastings on Thursday morning, doing slow work. This morning ho is to lie schooled, and if ho pulls up satisfactorily, he will be placed aboard the steamer at Napier on Monday, bound for Lyttelton,

Tho American jockey, D. Malier, rodo four winners in one day at the Ascot June meeting. When tho last mail left England, Maher had ridden -13 winners during the season, and was 20 ahead of tho next on tho list.

Bayardo's defeat in tho Goodwood Cup on Thursday would be a severe blow to his backers. Latest English files state that the son of Bay Ronald had a very easy victory in tho Ascot Gold Cup last month, and he would probably start a vory warm favourite in the Goodwood Cup. As a two-year-old, Bayardo was unbeaten. At three years he won eleven races, and was beaten in two—tho Two Thousand Guineas and tho Derby. At four years he was unbeaten until his defeat by Magic on Thursday. After his victory in the Ascot Gold Cup, Bayardo's total winnings amounted-to £43,704. People are now asking what will be Bayardo's fee when ho is sent to the stud. One English writer considers he is worth the .maximum ever given for an untried stallion, but it is considered doubtful whether under financial conditions of the present day breeders will over again give 500gns. fees.

BLOOD STOCK. 1 FOR HON. J. D. ORMOND'S STUD. Three valuable thoroughbreds arrived from England yesterday by the Rimutaka for the Hon. J. D. Orinond, of' Hastings.. They aro the stallion Hymettus and two fillies. Hymettus is from tho stud of Lord Marcus Beresford, and is a six-year-old chestnut horse by Cyllene from Sweet Balsam by Friar's Balsam from Enerdale by Galliard from Thirlmere. Cyllene, ,the sire of Hymettus, is. by Bona Vista, from Arcadia, and the loading strains of blood in his pedigree are Bend Or, Doncaster, and Isonomy. He was a good performer in EngTand,. and has also proved a great success at the stud. Ho was at the head of the list of winning sires in England last season, and has already sired three Derby winners. On one occasion Cyllene was sold for £37,500,' ,and two years ago ho again changed hands, that time at £25 ; 000, the buyer being a South American. During the last season he was in England CyHene's fee was 300 guineas.

' The fillies that arrived with Hymettus are Marty bv Martagon—Coster Girl, and a filly 'by Florizol ll—Gold Paste, both bred by Mr. AVm. Day, of Somerset. Martagon, sire of Marty, is also sire of Mr. J. F. Buchanan's Martian, and it\is also interesting to note that Magic, who beat Bayardo at Goodwood on Thursday, is by Martagon. Florizel 11, ,sire of the other filly, died in England last year after a useful career on the turf and at the stud. All three thoroughbreds made a good trip in spite of some rough weather on the voyage. Trainer S. Waddell saw them on board tho Rimutaka, and expressed a good opinion of them. FIXTURES. August 3.—Woodlands Hunt Club Annual Steeplechase. . '• Augusi 9, 11, and 13.—C.J.C. Grand National.
