Mr. William James, who arrived from the "Cni-ted States, of America by the Mokoia yesterday, in chargo of some prize Holstein cattle for Mr. Newton King, of Taranaki (a reference to which, appears.in our farm column), refers to the great heat which has been experienced during the present summer in America. Kocent cable messages haye dwelt on the drought in Canada, and in many of tho States, and the loss of lite from heat apoplexy in the East. Mr.. James says that ho struck the heat wave whilst travelling across the States. . "It was stilingly hot," ho said, "particularly getting through the State of Colorado, where the thermometer registered 123 degrees in the shade. It was a record— you must have had it in your papers. The cattle pulled through all right, but it was a wonder they did." -
With regard to. the new fonr-story. post office building at Auckland, costing , c£9B,ooo r the foundation stoiio of which will be laid by Sjr Joseph Ward on Monday, the C9iitractprs (Messrs. J.' .Tauiiesou, cf Christchurch) have made good progress, and should be ablo. to hand the place over to the Government at tho end of next year. Tho base, .which is in. the magnificent grey Coroirandcl granite, is now all in place,- and the bricklayers started yesterday morning on tho brick walls. Most of the work on the basement, which will be devoted to strong-rooms, parcel rooms, etc., has been complete.!, a little more remaining to be done to the reinforced floors in places. .
