FOR THE SAKE OF THE GIRLS.
A HOSTEL WANTED. [To the Editor.] Sir,—Will you allow me a small space to thank "Jenny Wren,", a contributor to The Dominion, for her.appeal on behalf of the girls of Wellington, that appeared a short time ago in the columns of Woman's World. Many thoughts of gratitude have gone out from the hearts 'of one particular branch of-women workers among women —namely, the Y.W.C.A.—to which' she drew especial attention. To its members and friends the plea is of real value, as they stand, much hi need of encouragement to contend with the difficulty this little band- , of noble women find in trying to raise funds to build a "hcrstel" of their ow : n to meet tho needs of the many girls who come to them for accommodation.
It.was not a. little surprising to mo to hear that this city had no hostel such as I had found in other towns. Still, at the earliest .opportunity I visited their rooms oil Lambton Quay, and found not only the material things' (of which "Jenny Wren" speaks),. but for visitor and stranger alike, with all courtesy and kindness a gracious welcome too. Ono is glad so much is done for" the : boys and young men of this city, and one can so thoroughly understand the true womanly heart going out in sympathy to them.. But must the girls lean almost entirely upon their own efforts to complete the great work so courageously begun ? Their "Hostel Penny Fund" is a scheme to be commended, to which every true citizen-would do well to contribute, should opportunity present itself. In one instance, £5 was collected within ii week by this means, showing the generosity of people ready and willing to give where true need is, and one must also see a .fine indication of the zeal the workers possess, and a grand fulfilling of .their splendid motto: "By Love Serve One Another."—l am, etc., ' -
