WAKEFIELD. FROM NEWCASTLE. At 7.20 a.m. yesterday'the steamer Wakefield, which arrived the previous night from Newcastle, via Auckland, was berthed at- the ltitilway Wharf. The vessel's late arrival from Auckland was due to the fact'that she experienced head winds and mountainous seas off the c-oast. She has a considerable quantity of coal to discharge at this port, and then returns to Newcastle about Saturday next. The Wakefield Is a neu steamer built. last yfear by L. J. Thompson, Sunderland, and engined by Dickenson and (H, She is owned by Messrs. Harris 'and Dixon, Ltd., London (owners of the Neptune, which called here a couple of months ago). The vessel's tonnage is 4072 tons gross, and 2535 tons net. Her dimensions are: Length 366 feet, breadth 51 feet. The Wakefield's first "voyage was from Glasgow to Durban with cargo, and she was then chartered to search for the Waratah. On lier return from the latter voyage, she was taken up by the Union Company on a time charter for four months.

Cioertz, late of the Northern Steamship Company, has joined the barquo Joseph Craig as mate. Tho distinction of being the first sailing vew>?l fitted with wireless telegraphic apparatus to visit Australia will probably fall to the American barquentine Everett G. Grijcs. Bhc is now bound to Delagoa Bay from Chemunius with lumber, and, according to advices, will afterwards com© on to Newcastle and load coal there. On Saturday next the Anchor Shipping Company's Waimea is due from. Wangaimi. She will load machinery, ex Marcrc,' £ot the Golden Bay cemeat works* • ••
The Wanafca, has been taed to load atOamaru on August 3, Bluff August 4, and 'i'imaru August 6 for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. A Sydney paper states that- the- new owner of the barquentine St. Kilda is Mr. Yf. Baker. Mr. J. M'Convllle, chief engineer of the Kapuni, is at present on leave, and Mr. J. ll'Leau is relieving him. The s.s. Breeze is advertised to sail for Lyttelton, Tiniaru, and Oamaru to-day at noon. !
