MARINE ENGINEERS' SOCIAL

A PRESENTATION. A • largejy-attended and very enjoyable social was, held last, night by the Marino Engineers' Institute in their new building at 'l'horndon. Among those .who attended were: The TCou. J. A. Millar (Minister ior Marine), and tho Hon. G. Fowlds (Minister ior Education). An hour and a quarter was spent in listening to a lecture by Lieutenant Sydenham, It.is., on scenes in the British Navy, illustrated with some unique pictuiws taken by'himself. The lecturer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, on the motion of the Hon. G. Kowlds. The acting-president of the club, Mr. W. C. F. Uichardson, presided. Tho Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C., on behalf, of the institute, presented a gold, emblem to Jlr. James Darling, the retiring president, as a niark of recognition of his services to the institute during his five years' term of office. Dancin'g followed, and musical items rendered by: Mesdames Mentiplay and Cornet,' and Mr. J. Carr. Messrs. P. M'Coll and H. W. Eoy were M.C.'s.

Supper was served in the library and the card-room (Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs, custodians, catering). Tbe billiard tables were in use, and the fine roof promenade was much patronised. The rooms were tastefully decorated. The arrangements were ably carried Mr. A. E. Hislop (secretary), and committees.
