LOCAL BUTTER RISE.
RETAIL PRICE Is. Id. PER LB,
A few weeks ago tho retail price of butter in some. "Wellington shops was reduced from Is. 2d. to Is. Id., and shortly after that to Is: per lb. Tlio retailors were able to make the reduction -owing, to a ■ certain brand ■ being brought down in wholeealo price to lOid. per lb. Yesterday, morning that brand was raised to 10fd., sud tho traders retailing it increased their 1 price to Is. Id. Tho retail figure; therefore, has been increased one penny, while the wholesalo price has gone up ono farthing. It was pointed out to a Dominion representative that all tho retailers do not get- Is. Id. net, hut Is. Id. minus 2£ per cent. That is because sonio of them allow 2A per cent, discount on monthly' accounts for groceries,: and butter is-included in the list of wares.
The head of a large retailing business says that butter is now being wholesaled: at 11-Jd. to them, which is tho reason for their ascending to Is. Id. Taking tho merchants as a whole there does not- appear to be any general move in the local butter market, but there is small chance of the popular table article coming down again to Is. during the remainder of the present winter, 'or in tho early spring.
