HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
•■ ' ■ « :—'-.. • The ordinary, meeting of the Hutt .Borough Council was held last evening, when there, were present:>' Mr. E.. P. Bunny ; (Mayor), Councillors Baldwin, Macaskill, Barlow, Hayes, Kempthorne, Pearce, Hawthorn, -Anson, and-Clere. The .'Mayor's : action in granting' the Pctone Citizens' Brass Band tho use of the Recreation Ground, for July 24, for -the purpose of rendering a programme of music, was approved. ' Messrs. Harris and Bastin supplied a catalogue of incandescent oil lamps. The council agreed that before contemplating purchasing further inquiries as to cost, etc, had to be made..
Mr. W. Armitage, of Camp Road, writing iu referenco to the drainage of the road, stated that he had been unjustly treated, having been asked Eo pay for .putting on a drain connection to the' maiu, arid painting out that the property adjoining his had had three connections made gratis.—lt was re-, solved -to inform Mr:. Armitage that the council could not depart from the 'rule laid down in.these matters. ..
A petition signed' by .14 ratepayers, of Park Avenue, was received. Petitioners, asked that the northern footpath should" be tarred and. that some means should be provided for getting rid of the .surface water. —Councillor Hawthorn was deputed to confer • with the engineer regarding the cost of putting in a drain in the avenue. A previous resolution in reference to calling for tenders for laying drainage services to premises was rescinded. • It was resolved that all applications for drainage .services should be lodged with the engineer so that a report could be presented to the'council. The Education Board made application for permission to erect a school in wood, iu Victoria Street, the site being within the brick area.—lt was decided,'on the motion of. the Mayor, that the board be .informed that the application could not be granted at present, but that the council would take into consideration the amendment of the brick area by-law..
The following tenders were accepted: —J. Cloake,' cartage of all,material delivered anywhere in the borough, 6s. lid. per ton; P. Simpson, cartage of small parcels (under 281b.) to and from Wellington, 3d. per parcel; C. T. • Gosse, cartage of shingle (per yard) to any part of the borough roads or works, from the nearest beach to proposed works, 2s. per yard; D. W. Gosse, cartago of cement from Wellington per cask, anywhere to borough, 2s. per •;ask; W: Munde and J. Coffey, supplying use of single and double horse drays, ts. 6d. and Is. lid. per hour; J. Cloake, cartage of. tar from Wellington to Hutt.
Councillor Hawthorn moved: That the council appoint a committee, consisting of Councillors Macaskill,.Barlow; and the mover, to confer with the engineer oh all matters pertaining to works of street maintenance.—The motion was carried.
The Mayor moved: That a commit tee, consisting of Councillors Hawthorn, Kempthorne, and the mover, be appointed to look into and report upon the state of the\£ll,ooo loan.—Carried. The engineer .reported that further progress had been made'with the work at Everest Creek, and 53 chains of the culvert going west had been'complete. The estimated cost was £2500, and the expenditure to date £1745 2s. 2d. Eight connections had been made with the water main, making A total of 604 to date.. The paths in Alicetown were being prepared for tarring. Metalling and repairs to Hutt Road were in hand. A storm water relief drain' was being put in from Wobum Road to Black Creek.- Total expenditure' for past , two weeks, £418 13s. 9d. .'.
