NEW ZEALANDERS ABROAD.
PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON. London, Juno 16. Mr. J. S. Handyside, of Akitio, arrived in London by the lonic, from New Zealand, and intends to visit relatives in Scotland and Ireland before returning to tho Dominion in tho autumn. Mr. James Smith, of Wellington, is visiting England, after an absence of 35 years, and is gathering information in this country regarding municipal and local ■ government .and the wool, meat, and hemp markets. Mr. Godfrey Powell, of Wellington, lias come to England as a delegate to represent the Australasian colonies at the conference of the Amalgamated Socity of Carpenters and Joiners, held at Manchester this week.
Miss Mary M'Lean, of Napier, since her arrival by the Mongolia, has spent the past month in London. She will go to Scotland, this month for a_ week or two, and from there, to Vienna, where she intends to study the piano.
Mr. W. Hulbert, of Wellington, who arrived by the Star of Australia, on May 29, intends to get work in Scotland if possible, in order to enlargo his experience in engineering. Ho will take a trip to the Isle of Man before settling down.
Mr. G. Gibson, a Brettanby (YoiK-. shire) farmer, who leaves for Taranaki on June K4, was presented this week with a silver cream jug by tho committee of the Darlington Farmers' l.'rotectivo Society, of which Mr. Gibson has been .an active'member.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Andre, of Whangarei, arrived in Loudon by the Otwuy, and will shortly go on to Brussels, Mr. Andre's home, for a couple of months. They will visit Scotland and Ireland before returning to Now Zealand, by the Orontes, on September 30.
Mr. J. Sorehsen, of Christchuroh, att'l his cousin, Mrs. Knox, arrived in England by tho Orsova. Mr. Sorensen intends shortly to go to Denmark to stay with relatives, afterwards visiting Scotland and the, Continent. Ho returns to New Zealand early next year.
•.Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Tonkin,.of Auckland, who arrived with their'child by the Orsova, propose visiting various •centres of interest, but will' spend most of their holiday in Padstow, Cornwall, Mr. Tonkin's native town. Mr. Tonkin has boon absent from England'for 13 years. ' ■ . '
Mrs. J. Card and Miss E. and H. Card, of Featherston, arrived in London by the Morea, and after a fow more days here intend to visit the late Mr. Card's birthplace, at Westbury, Wilts., and then cross to Ireland to spend a few months in Cork, later visiting Scotland' and the Continent.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L.' Kelly, late of Wellington, have decided to return \o New Zealand, and. will leave for tho Dominion in October. Mr. Kelly's <>.v perienco of tho English winter, trhich lie spent at Torquay, has convinced him that the climate does not suit his health so well as that.of New.Zealand;
Mr. Frederick Martin, of ChristcKurch, whojs returning to England after an absence .'of over 30 years, left the German liner Roon'at Suez early last year, and spent a few weeks in Egypt, and after visiting tho principal English watering places in company with his sister, spent several months on the Continent, where ho visited the Riviera, Italy, Switzerland, and Paris. Before returning to, New Zealand, Mr. Martin intends to spend some littlo time in tho Channel Islands and Norway.
Mr., and Mrs. Will -Forrester and the Misses M. and V. Forrester are on a holiday trip to this country, which Mr. Forrester is revisiting after .29 years' residence in Dunodin. After a fortnight in London they propose visiting Manchester, Scotland, Ireland, and Paris, returning to New Zealand via 1 Sydney and Melbourne, on September 9, by' the Macedonia. Mr. A. W. Rutherford has. arrived in London after an extensive tour of France, accompanied by his wifo and daughters, and is -staying. at the Grand. Hotel. They will spend a month in London, then visit Scotland and Ireland, next year seeing as much of Europo as possible, : and leaving for New Zealand via Canada in August, 1911.
Lady Islington has been staying at Hartham Park, her husband's principal seat in Wiltshire,' and has been entertaining friends there, including the Duko and" Duchess of Beaufort, Lord Alexander Thynne, and Mr. and Mrs. Asquith. Lady Islington is- a great friend of the Duke and Duchess, of Connaught, and lias given several balls for Princess- Patricia and her sister, tho'Crown Princess of Sweden.
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Holmes, of Auckland, and Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Rhodes, of Rangitikei, who arrivod at Plymouth by the' Morea' last Fnddy week, propose to spend a month in London, and then take a motor trip to Scotland. On their return Mr. and -Mrs. Holmes will visit Ireland aml| the Continent. While in London they hope to see the All-England Lawn Tennis Championships, in which Mr. Holmes is much interested.
The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, High Commissioner for New Zealand,' was received in audience by the King on Friday morning. He followed Lord Strathcona, and preceded Sir George Reid, High Commissioners for Canada and Australia respectively. The .audience lasted about 25 minutes. King George expressed, his thanks for the sympathy shown by New Zealand in his recent bereavement. He recalled his visit to the Dominion witli evident pleasure, and chatted freely on various topics. .Earlier in the week Mr. Hall-Jones was received .by Queen Alexandra, who also thanked him for New Zealand's many tributes of sympathy.
