WELLINGTON, 6; WAIRARAPA, 3. THIRD SHIELD MATCH. Only a few spectators crossed tho stormy harbour waters to Day's Bay on Saturday afternoon to witness what proved to be a very interesting and well-fought shield game, between the representative teams of Wellington and Wairarapa. Wellington were hot favourites prior to tho match, but there were stages when a spectator would have inclined to tho opinion that tho visitin;; team wero going to wrest the shield from Wellington. So it appeared in the ca;;y part of tho game, and it was n?t urtil Wairarapa had secured the first two goals that Wellington players woke up. Mr. H. V. Walton was reftree, and the gamo was played on No. 2 ground, which was very slippery. The Teams. Wellington (Yellow aud Black).—AV. G.. . Morpeth (goalkeeper), C. Ilickson (captain), F. Ashbolt (full-backs); L. Christie, C. Campbell, N. Smytho (halves); R. Parton, D. Smith, G. Strack, and E. Loader (forwards). Wairarapa (Black and White). U. Richards (goalkeeper); G. Tunnicliil'e, G. Thynne (full-backs); N. Boyd, S. Siovers, S. Morgan (halves); B. Hatch, E. Tuunicliffe, W. Fisher, W. Minnett, and It. Reid (forwards). Bad Opening for Wellington. Wairarapa played with the wind behind them, and give-and-take play marked tho greater part of tho spell. In fact, the first half was nearly over before the first score occurred. In its closing stages, Wairarapa pressed, Tunnicliffo and Minnett being prominent, and Christie conceded a corner. From the free-hit, Fisher scored a grand goal.. Wairarapa, 1; Wellington, nil. This stroke of war was soon followed by another, for Minnett scored again in a few moments, almost before tho Wellington players couia realise what had happened. Wellington apparently were treating their opponents too lightly. Wairarapa, 2; Wellington, nil. The second goal wsts tho result or a good picce of play on the part of Hatch. Stimulated somewhat, Wellington now rallied, and, from a free-hit, C. Strack presently scored off a splendid shot. WairarapU, 2; Wellington, 1. This "breaking of the duck" livened the Wellington forwards up considerably, but Wairarapa still mado the pace, and Sievers centred to Reid, who carried play to the other end. By way of counterstroke the Wellington forwards made several spleudid charges, the most prominent in thfjse being: C. Strack, I'arton, and Smith. Campbell and Smythe, halves, also put in good work, but the call of half-time found Wellington still one goal behind. After a very-short spell, play was resumed, aud tho locals lost little time in getting to business. The Deficit Wiped Out. Keid charged, and sent across a splendid pass. Wellington secured the ball, returning the compliment, and G. Strack quickly notched a magnificent point. Wellington, 2; AVairarapa, 2. On resuming, Hatch mado a creditable charge and passed to Tunnicliffe, but the latter foil and a Wellington player cleared the defence. This piece of play was quickly followed by another Wellington goal, G. Strack scoring again.. Wellington, 3; Wairarapa, 2. Wellington were now taking charge of the game, and seemed to outclass their opponents all round, lieid, however, saw an opening in midfield, and from a roll in he broke away, but the ball passed across to Loader, who charged splendidly, and ccutred ' to' 'Parton, the latter's shot sending the leather past the Wairarapa goal-keeper and over the line. From the corner-hit, Wairarapa charged, Morgan being prominent. Campbell effected a good "save," and play was returned by Loader, with a splendid run. •A"scramble ensiled in'AVairarapa's goalmouth, and, for kicking the ball, Wellington wero awarded a free-hit against Tunnicliffe. No score resulted. Wairarapa made an effort to score off a f'CChit given in their favour in mid-field. This time G. Tunnicliffe carried the ball down into Wellington's defence, but his shot went wide. This was the signal for frequent forward movements on the part of Wellington. Parton centred to Strack, but the last-named foiled to take tho, pass and a splendid opportunity was lost. Reid now received the ball from across field, and mado off into the Wellington circle, but Hickson was ready a» usual, and effected a good "save." Then Fisher broke away,' but'was beaten near the circle. Wairarapa, (low pressed dangerously near l.ho opposing goal-mouth, but a free-hit gave Wellington an opportunity of clearing their defence. The local, forwards charged, but the leather passed over tho goal-lino. Wairarapa returned plav to tho other end of the field, but the" ball did not riach tho goal-moutli, and Thynne was shortly palled upon to stop a Wellington charge. Wairarapa again tested, tlieir opponents' defence, Fisher being prominent, while Morpeth effected a "save" from a hot shot in grand style. More play of this order followed, and then, from a free-hit by Wellington, in Wairarapa quarters, C. Strack took a pass and scored. AVelliugton, 1; Wairarapa 2. The Wellington forwards attacked again, and play was fast, exciting, and open. Sievers warned off a grand charge, but Wellington, nevertheless, kept play in their 25. Campbell here saved splendidly, and Tunnicliffe was also prominent with a good "save." Wellington presently initiated onother forward movement, and G. Strack scored, again. Wellington, 5, Wairarapa 2. Tunnicliffe mado a splendid effort to chargi into the opposing circle, but Campbell eventually passed to Loader, the ball finally reaching Parton, who fell in striking. Tho Wairarapa goal-keeper was in doubt, and kicked the ball clear of the net. Boyd took a free-hit near midfield, and subsequently a roll-in was taken several times on account of breaches of the rule. Finally Boyd cleared, and a AVairarapa rush was initiated and eventually "saved" by Ashbolt. Loader now moved' rapidly downfield, and passed to Strack, but AVairarapa secured the leather, and ■ from a scrappy charge Eeid scored. AA 7 ellington 5, AVairarana 3. With only five minutes to go, Loader and Strack came into prominence once more, and G. Strack sent in a wide shot. Minnett and Reid initiated a splendid charge but Smytho saved, and Loader sent up a "sky scraper." I AVellington charged, and, just as the goalkeeper went to save, lie fell, and Loader rushed up and scored a maenificent ' goal. AVellington 6, AVairarapa 3. This I was the final score.
JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES. AVAIRARAPA, 3; WELLINGTON, 2. This was an uninteresting game, played on No. 4 ground, Day's Bay. The ground was very muddy, and the visitors won by 3 goals to 2. Brodie was first to score and a sccond goal in favour of AVellington was only saved through a ptayer giving "sticks." AVairarapa livened up aud managed to penetrate the half-line, but Falkiner and Cameron were equal to tho task and quickly returned play to the other end of tho field. Kiesenbcrg was prominent and he eventually cleared in good style, finally putting the ball to the other quarter. 'The Wellington forwards then pressed down into the Wairarapa circle, and Brodio secured another gonl. The first spell ended with B. Morris notching AVairarapa's first goal, and the score at half-time read :-AA T ellingtou, 2; AVairarapa, 1. . _ . The second spell was very dull.
