;■: « - . ANNUAL REPORT.' The thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand' Educational Institute will be held in the Assemblv Hall. South Wellington
The thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand' Educational Institute will be held in the Assembly Hall, South Wellington School, on Friday next, when the report and balance-sheet will be 1 considered, and officers elected to administer, the affairs of the institute for the ensuing year. Jy'binmations of representatives - to the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute, to be held at Hokiiika in January next, must be sent in before July 31 next. After the business before the annual meeting has been disposed of, a "social" and damv will be held, all teachers and their immediate friends being invited.
The annual report, to be presented to the-meeting, states that the year had boeu u ijuiet uue. During-the year a spucial-eh'ort was made.to secure new members, and a lefcer, setting out some of the claims of the institute on teachers, and the advantages of membership, was printed and sent to eighty-seven teachers. Thirty-live.replied, of whom only four declined membership. This result , the committee considers on the whole satisfactory, but would like to have had a more ready response from teachers in the larger schools, many of whom' failed to reply even to a second request. '.'This lack of courtesy on the part of some even of our senior teachers is regrettable,'" states the committee. The total number of members is uovr 2G5, an increase of 20 on last year's number. As it appears that there is northing to prevent unccrtiiicated teachcrs becoming members of the institute, the committee recommends; tbut un effort be made by the . incoming committee to secure tiio membership of all teachers in the employ of the board, but desires at the same time to point out that (he only really satisfactory, way. to' achieve this end 13 ioi* every member to become a recruit- • agent. As the board has now over 400 adult teachers in its employ, there is ample scope for energy in tliis~ direction. J/he committee regrets to record the death of Mr. K llason, and of Mr." E. J. Lc:k>
live general meetings of the institute weru held,, at which the average atlondanco was 26—an increase of.four oil that of the previous year. At the June meeta®' ? os^el '> M.A., gave an interesting paper on "Superannuation," and from his intimate knowledge of the Acts and regulations bearing on the subject •was able to give much valuable information. The annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held Oiis year in Wellington, the Wellington branch being represented by Miss M. H. Craig, Miss A. A. Dowdeswell, and Messrs. A. N. Burns, B.AI, G. AT. Henderson, and H. A. Parkinson, M.A. Tho Managing Committee held twelve meetings, several of which, in connection with the New Zealand Conference. Were attended by local members of the New Zealand Executive.
It was decided to place the case of & member, .threatened with prosecution by a parent, in the hands of the institute's legal avisers. It is gratifying to be ablo .to record that this was sufficient to prevent the case going to Court. A second similar case was successfully defended in Court. Members will thus realise (suggests the committee) 'that , the right to Buch assistance is cheaply gained by the Payment their small subscriptions. . An effort was made during the year to secure a room in the Education Boord's buildings as i permanent homo for the institute, but this has so far proved unsuccessful. Though the board and its office staff are desirous of giving us all the assistance in their power, they have found it impossible, under existing cirto,.Taca,t,e an 3r of-their rooms. .Notwithstanding the heavy exnensss in r ? conference" of the N.Z.t.l.ur Wellington, the finances are sa . tlstactor y condition, the balancev 't?.Vi howlD S an es °ess of assets over iiabuines amounting to ,£2OO lis, 2d.
