LABOUR AND VICE-ROYALTY.
GOVERNMENT. HOUSE- GROUNDS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, July 23. At the Trades and Labour. Contereucn this morning, a letter was read from Mr. P. E. Cheal, asking for an expression of opinion on the subject of the proposed diversion of thi> Government Houso grounds, Auckland, from their original purpose. He said:— With many the historic interest of Government' House is of weight; with many moro of us tho fact that it is in the Aucklnnd Domain by statute under the Public Domains Act, 1881, has for greater weight." Mr. Cheal suggested that, if there were a subdivision, the workers should ask that provision be made for a Trade Unionist Hall, and n recreation ground for apprentices and young women workers. Mr. J. Savage (Auckland) moved:— "That this conference would sincerely protest against any proposal to deal with the domains of the Dominion by diverting ,them to any puvpose other than that of a recreation reserve for all time, and would therefore protest against an Auckland domain being legislated upon for any purpose other than that of a recreation reserve for all time." The mover said that, as far as the workers were concerned, they did not care much whether there was a Governor or not, or whether he lived iu Auckland or anywhere else, but they did object to the people's parka being despoijed. Messrs. H. L. Horning and T. Long supported the motion. Mr. E. J. Howard said that they had .the same difficulty in CJinslchurtn. The motion was carried unanimously.
