NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(Bt Ulencok.)

The Auckland horse Electrakoff was. spelled on Thursday and Friday in order to freshen him up for his race to-day. On Wednesday the Mcnschikoff colt was near tho front half-way down the straight, but when California and Sir Frisco caught and passed him he eased iin. He will be ridden by C. Brown iii tho Onslow Handicap to-day. J. Stewart will ride Mahuta in the Final Hurdles at Trentham this afternoon. California, who is. top-weight in the Winter Oats Handicap, won the event two years ago. Jlerric Zealand, another' of tiio candidates, won the race last year. Master Paul may be expected to jump much better to-day than lie did on Wednesday. The northern flior was not schooled for some time prior to his race on Wednesday, so it may. safely be assumed that he will be a much improved horse. It is stated tha+. Corazon is a doubtful starter in the July Steeples to-day, as his trainer is anxious to reserve him for thb Grand National next month. This being so, there is nothing likely to go out in front with Sir Lethe, and consequently the Martinborough , gelding may be expected to give a much improved display. All sorts of different opinions are being heard as to the merits of Gold Battery. Many aver that ho was unfortunate in-losing on Wednesday, but others take a contrary view, and say that lie is always a poor finisher. Today's running may clear up the matter. Paisano is well enough treated by tho handicapper in the Final Hurdles to-day, and it came as no surprise to find him amongst the acceptors. The Strojvan geldinc; has already earned the maximum penalty for tho National Hurdles, so a win to-day would not be harmful to his prospects at the C.J.C. meeting. D. Moraghan left for Riccarton last night with Manchester, who competed unsuccessfully at the Trentham meeting on Saturday and Wednesday. Tho Government tax paid by tho Auckland Racing Club for the past season amounted to £4017 13s. lid. During the same period the club received £9696 10s. in bookmakers' fees, while their percentage, from the totalisator totalled £19,526 Bs. 9d. Compass was yesterday withdrawn from the Final Hurdles to. be run at Trentham this afternoon. '■ Ono. hundred and twelve nominations have been received for tho Woodlands Hunt Steeplechase Meeting, to bo held at Fahiatua on August 3..\-.\ Amongst the entries are jumpers from Haivke's BajY.Wairarapa, and Manawatu. Tho course will bo"in first-class-order, and there is every probability of a record gathering. It is notified that, bookmakers will ho licensed to bet at the riieeting, application to bo niado to the secretary, Mr. Arnold Weston, -'on the day of tho races. [ Red M'Gregor made up his ground in a wonderful manner in the last six furlongs, of the AVellington Steeplechase, and thero can be no mistake that jho is a really good horse. Ho seemed so full of running at ihc end of his race that many compare him to Kiatoro when tho latter u.is in his prime. Although Red M'Gregor came too late with Ins run to seriously trouble Capitol on Wednesday, he was nevertheless very closo to Capitol at tho finish, and ho pulled up much . better than the winner. Allowing that Windsor, the trainer and jockey, understands Red M'Gresror better than anyone else, it appeared from the spectators' point of view that tho horse was kept too far away from tho leaders in the first couplo of miles in Wednesday's race. Ho caught the leaders all right, but in tho meantime Capitol had stolen a march on him. ,
